''Man with a Beer Jug'' is an oil-on-canvas painting by the Dutch Golden Age painter Frans Hals, painted in the early 1630s, now in a private collection. Painting This painting was documented by Seymour Slive in 1974, who claimed that it was in the collection of Henry Reichhold in White Plains, New York. The figure of a red deer on the front of the beer jug corresponds with the house name "Het Rode Hert" of the Haarlem beer brewer Cornelis Guldewagen, whose portrait was painted by Hals in 1660. Though the genre of the work is similar to works painted by Hals in the early thirties, the rough brush strokes are more similar to his work in the sixties. Seymour Slive
Seymour Slive (September 15, 1920 – June 14, 2014) was an American art historian, who served as director of the Harvard Art Museums from 1975 to 1984. Slive was a scholar of Dutch art, specifically of the artists Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Jacob van Ruisdael. Early life and education A Chicago native and the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants Daniel and Sophia Rapoport, Slive received his bachelor's degree in 1943 and DPhil in 1952, both from the University of Chicago. He served in the United States Navy Reserve during World War II, starting in his junior year of college, and was on active duty in the Pacific Theater from 1942 to 1946. Career Slive was appointed to his first teaching position at Oberlin College in 1950, but soon moved on to Pomona College, where he became an assistant professor of art and chair of department from 1952 to 1954. Dutch Golden Age painting is the painting of the Dutch Golden Age, a period in Dutch history roughly spanning the 17th century, during and after the later part of the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648) for Dutch independence. The new Dutch Republic was the most prosperous nation in Europe and led European trade, science, and art. The northern Netherlandish provinces that made up the new state had traditionally been less important artistic centres than cities in Flanders in the south. The upheavals and large-scale transfers of population of the war, and the sharp break with the old monarchist and Catholic cultural traditions, meant that Dutch art had to reinvent itself almost entirely, a task in which it was very largely successful. Zuiderhofje
The Zuiderhofje is a hofje in Haarlem, Netherlands. History The hofje was founded in 1640 by Jacques van Damme and his wife Elisabeth Blinckvliedt, and is owned by the Mennonite church of Haarlem. The couple gave an order to Michael Slaghreegen on the 25th of February 1640, to purchase a house on the Zuiderstraat and build a few houses there for elderly women of the ''Vlaemsche Block'', the largest branch of Mennonites in Haarlem at that time. This branch was primarily Flemish in origin, and their church ''De Olijblock'' was located on the Klein Heiligland street, near their orphanage, ''Het Doopsgezinde Weeshuis''. The orphanage archives date back to 1634, and its location adjoined the former hofje ''Blokshofje'', that can still be seen, but was sold by the Mennonite church in 1970.
