Soccer in the United States is run by different organizations. The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) governs most levels of soccer in the country, including the national teams, professional leagues, and amateur leagues, being the highest soccer authority in the country. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) governs most colleges; secondary schools are governed by state-level associations, with the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) setting the rules at that level. The match regulations are generally the same between the three governing bodies although there are many subtle differences. , over 24.4 million people play soccer in the United States. 1975 North American Soccer League Season
Statistics of North American Soccer League in season 1975. This was the 8th season of the NASL. Overview The league comprised 20 teams with the Tampa Bay Rowdies winning the championship. Pelé joined the New York Cosmos in 1975. 1975 was the first year the league used the term Soccer Bowl for their championship game. Changes from the previous season Rules changes The 1975 season saw the removal of tie games. Matches that were level after 90 minutes would go to 15 minutes of sudden death overtime, and then onto penalty kicks if needed. It would not be until 2000 that a top-tier American soccer league would again allow matches to end in a draw. The 1979 North American Soccer League season was the 67th season of FIFA-sanctioned soccer and the 12th with a national first-division league in the United States and Canada. Clyde Best
Clyde Cyril Best, Order of the British Empire, MBE (born 24 February 1951) is a Bermudian former Association football, football player. He was one of the first Black people, black players in Football League First Division, First Division football in England, scoring 47 goals as a Forward (association football), striker for West Ham United F.C., West Ham United between 1968 and 1976. Early and personal life Best moved from Bermuda to England at the age of 17, to play for West Ham United F.C., West Ham United. Upon his arrival he was looked after by club captain Bobby Moore. He has credited Moore and fellow West Ham players Harry Redknapp and Billy Bonds with helping him deal with racist abuse. 1978 North American Soccer League Playoffs
The 1978 North American Soccer League playoffs began on August 8 and ended on August 27 with Soccer Bowl '78 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. 16 out of 24 teams qualified after a 30-match regular season, eight from each conference. Playoff format The top two teams in each division would quality for the playoffs. The other spots would go to the next best two teams in the conference, regardless of division. The top three seeds went to the division winners, seeds 4-6 went to the second place teams and the last two seeds were known as 'wild-cards', a nod to the NFL's playoff format. The winners of each successive round would be reseeded within the conference by point total. The first round and the Soccer Bowl were single games, while the conference semifinals and championships were two-game series. Stewart Scullion
Stewart McNab Adam Scullion (born 18 April 1946) is a Scottish former footballer, who played as a winger. Born in Bo'ness, Scotland, he started his professional career in the Football League, helping Watford to the Third Division title, and then spending three seasons at Sheffield United. After a second spell at Watford, he joined Tampa Bay Rowdies in the North American Soccer League. He was their second highest goalscorer in his first season, and in both years was named in the league's second All-star team. Scullion briefly returned to England with Wimbledon, before finishing his professional career in America with the Portland Timbers. Early life Scullion moved to England from his hometown of Bo'ness, West Lothian aged 13. He attended Bourne Secondary School in Ruislip, and worked as a clerk for British European Airways. 1977 North American Soccer League Season
Statistics of North American Soccer League in season 1977. This was the 10th season of the NASL. Overview The league was made up of 18 teams. The schedule was expanded to 26 games and the playoffs to 12 teams. Team rosters consisted of 17 players, 6 of which had to be US or Canadian citizens. The NASL began using its own variation of the penalty shoot-out procedure for tied matches. Matches tied at the end of regulation would now go to a golden goal overtime period and, if still tied, on to a shoot-out. Instead of penalty kicks however, the shoot-out attempt started 35 yards from the goal and allowed the player 5 seconds to attempt a shot. The player could make as many moves as he wanted in a breakaway situation within the time frame. NASL procedure also called for the box score or score-line to show an additional "goal" given to the winning side of a shoot-out. Tony Betts
Anthony Thomas Betts (born 31 October 1953) is an English former footballer who played as a forward. He played in the Football League, the North American Soccer League, and the Major Indoor Soccer League. He began his career at Aston Villa, featuring in the 1972 FA Youth Cup final. He was loaned out to Southport in 1974–75, before he emigrated to America to play for the Portland Timbers. He helped the Timbers to the final of the Soccer Bowl in 1975, before briefly returning to England with Port Vale and Boldmere St. Michael's. He returned to Portland Timbers for two more seasons, before joining the Minnesota Kicks in 1979. He then spent the last three years of his career with indoor football club Buffalo Stallions. Career Betts started his career as a professional at Aston Villa in March 1972 and played for the "Villans" in the 1972 FA Youth Cup final win over Liverpool, playing alongside players such as John Gidman, Alan Little, and Brian Little.
