Portland Timbers (1975–82)
The Portland Timbers are an American professional men's soccer club based in Portland, Oregon. The Timbers compete in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member club of the league's Western Conference. The Timbers have played their home games at Providence Park since 2011, when the team began play as an expansion team in the league. The club was founded in 2009, when the city of Portland was awarded an expansion berth to Major League Soccer. The team operating rights are owned by Peregrine Sports under the majority ownership of Merritt Paulson, whose companies had acquired the then-USL Pro team in 2007 and later established the Portland Thorns women's team in 2012 (all MLS franchises are centrally owned by the league itself, which grants operating rights and privileges to the individual club "owners," who are also shareholders in MLS). Stewart Scullion
Stewart McNab Adam Scullion (born 18 April 1946) is a Scottish former footballer, who played as a winger. Born in Bo'ness, Scotland, he started his professional career in the Football League, helping Watford to the Third Division title, and then spending three seasons at Sheffield United. After a second spell at Watford, he joined Tampa Bay Rowdies in the North American Soccer League. He was their second highest goalscorer in his first season, and in both years was named in the league's second All-star team. Scullion briefly returned to England with Wimbledon, before finishing his professional career in America with the Portland Timbers. Vancouver Whitecaps (1974–84)
Vancouver Whitecaps Football Club is a Canadian professional Association football, soccer team based in Vancouver. They compete in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member club of the league's Western Conference (MLS), Western Conference. The MLS iteration of the club was established on March 18, 2009, and began play in 2011 as the 17th team to enter Major League Soccer while replacing the USSF Division 2 Professional League, USSF Division 2 Vancouver Whitecaps (1986–2010), team of the same name in the city, making them a Phoenix club (association football), phoenix club and the third to carry the Whitecaps name. Jim Gorsek
James Gorsek (born October 12, 1955 in Portland, Oregon), known as Jim Gorsek or Jimmy Gorsek, is a former American soccer goalkeeper. He spent seven seasons in the North American Soccer League, seven seasons in the Major Indoor Soccer League and two in the Continental Indoor Soccer League. He also earned two caps with the U.S. national team in 1985. Professional Gorsek signed with the Portland Timbers of the North American Soccer League in 1977 as a striker replacement player. He played three games that season, none in 1978 and only one in 1979. In 1980, he saw time in twelve games, but was traded to the San Diego Sockers. In 1981, he played two games, but is not listed on the team’s roster for 1982. Garry Ayre
Garry Ayre (born October 12, 1953 in Vancouver, British Columbia) is a retired soccer player. He played in the North American Soccer League, the Major Indoor Soccer League and for the Canadian national team. Career He was with amateur side New Westminster Blues in 1976. In 1977 Garry turned professional with the Vancouver Whitecaps played 23 games in that first season and 15 in 1978 before being transferred to the New York Cosmos. With the Whitecaps, Ayre was used in a special midfield role to shadow the opposition's key offensive player. With the Cosmos, Ayre played in Soccer Bowl '78 as a substitute as well as a tour of Europe in the fall of 1978, where the team played against Red Star Belgrade, AEK Athens, Atlético Madrid, Galatasaray and Chelsea. Dale Mitchell (soccer)
Dale William Mitchell (born April 21, 1958) is a Canadian former professional soccer striker who played for several North American teams in the 1980s and 1990s. He made 55 appearances for the Canada national team and scored a then national record 19 goals. He coached the Canada national team from May 2007 until March 27, 2009. In 2012 as part of the Canadian Soccer Association's centennial celebration, he was named to the all-time Canada XI men's team. He was inducted into the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame in 2002. Mike Flater
Mike Flater (born January 22, 1951, in Evanston, Illinois) is a retired U.S. soccer forward who spent six seasons in the North American Soccer League. He was also a member of the 1972 U.S.Olympic soccer team and earned fifteen caps with the U.S. national soccer team between 1975 and 1977. College Flater attended the Colorado School of Mines. In addition to playing soccer, he also played as a placekicker on the school's football team. In 1973, he scored a 63-yard field goal. The Washington Redskins drafted Flater in the ninth round of the 1974 NFL Draft. Brian Reginald Gant (born April 23, 1952) is a Canadian retired soccer player who spent nine seasons in the North American Soccer League and played fifteen games with the Canada national team. Player Professional After playing college soccer at Simon Fraser University, Gant signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps of the North American Soccer League in 1974. William John Anderson (born 24 January 1947) is an English former professional footballer who played as a winger. During his career, he made over 350 appearances in the Football League. He began his career as a youth player with Manchester United, making his professional debut at the age of sixteen. However, he struggled to establish himself in the first team, largely due to the emergence of George Best in his position, and was sold to Aston Villa in January 1967 for £20,000. Relegated in his first season, he later helped the club win promotion back to the First Division and made over 200 appearances in all competitions before joining Cardiff City in 1973. With Cardiff, he won promoted to the Second Division and reached three Welsh Cup finals, winning two in 1973 and 1974.
