Portland TV
Portland TV was a British adult television company that was owned by Neon X that offered subscription and pay-per-view services to UK audiences on the Sky UK, Virgin TV and Freeview platforms. History The company was established in London Docklands in 1995 as the adult broadcasting division of the British publishing group Northern & Shell. At one point, Portland owned its own broadcasting facilities, but they were transferred to Channel 5, which Northern & Shell also then owned. In 2016, Portland TV was sold by Northern & Shell in a management buy-out, becoming wholly owned by Neon X, in a deal that saw Northern & Shell's complete departure from involvement in the UK television industry. Portland was reportedly sold for less than £1 million after contributing less than two per cent of group revenues per year over the previous three years, or about £9 million per annum. Television X (TVX) is a series of adult pay-per-view television channels in the United Kingdom owned by MG Global Entertainment (Europe) Limited. Until 2020, it was owned by Portland TV which was a subsidiary of Richard Desmond's publishing company Northern & Shell until 2016. All of the programmes on the main Television X channel are filmed and produced in the United Kingdom. It was also known as Television X – The Fantasy Channel for a long time, although it has since dropped that name. TVX 40+ is a British television channel that shows pornographic content on a pay-per-view basis. The channel has been owned by Aylo Global Entertainment (Europe) Limited since 2020 when Aylo (formerly MindGeek) acquired the channel's previous owner, Portland TV. History On 28 February 2017, Portland TV launched three new adult pay-per-view channels on the Sky and Virgin platforms to replace Red Hot, Viewer's Wives and Extreme Filth. The new channels were Xrated 40+, Xrated Couples and Xrated Hook Ups. Freeview (UK)
Freeview is the United Kingdom's sole digital terrestrial television platform. It is operated by Digital UK Ltd and DTV Services Ltd, a joint venture between the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Sky. It was launched on 30 October 2002, taking over the licence from ITV Digital which collapsed that year. The service provides consumer access via an aerial to the seven DTT multiplexes covering the United Kingdom. As of July 2020, it has 85 TV channels, 26 digital radio channels, 10 HD channels, six text services, 11 streamed channels, and one interactive channel. Delivery of standard-definition television and radio is labelled Freeview, while delivery of HDTV is called Freeview HD. London Docklands is the riverfront and former docks in London. 40+ is a British television channel that shows pornographic content on a pay-per-view basis. The channel has been owned by MG Global Entertainment (Europe) Limited since 2020 when MG acquired the channel's previous owner, Portland TV. The channel began broadcasting on Sky in June 2000 as one of a group of channels called Red Hot TV. R18 (Restricted 18) is a film or video classification given by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). It is intended to provide a classification for works that are within British obscenity laws, but exceed what the BBFC considers acceptable for its 18 certificate. In practice, this means hardcore pornography. Under the terms of the 1984 Video Recordings Act all non-exempt videos sold or distributed within the UK must be given a certificate by the BBFC. The distributor must decide whether a video is exempt.
