Portland Rugby Football Club (Maine)
Portland Rugby Football Club is one of the oldest rugby clubs in the state of Maine, having been founded in 1969 along with the Bowdoin Rugby Football Club. Since its foundation, the team has been playing in a Division II men's league (apart from several stints in Division I), which is attributed to the New England Rugby Football Union. History Originally, the club began in Brunswick, Maine, approximately 25 miles north of Portland. Bowdoin College offered both new players as well as facilities. The team had access to athletic facilities, locker rooms, a playing field, and a practice field. The nearby Brunswick Naval Air Station provided players who had rugby backgrounds. The New England Rugby Football Union (NERFU) is a Geographical Union (GU) for rugby union teams in New England. Prior to 2013, NERFU had been a local area union ("LAU"), and part of the Northeast Rugby Union (NRU), which is the governing body for three LAU's (New York State Rugby Football Conference (NYSRFC) and Metropolitan New York Rugby Union being the others). Bowdoin Rugby Football Club
Bowdoin Rugby Football Club is the men's rugby club of Bowdoin College, founded in 1969 with a combination of students from Bowdoin and men from Portland, Maine. The BRFC shares its origins with the Portland Rugby Club, making it one of the oldest rugby teams in the state of Maine. It is one of the largest non-varsity sports teams at Bowdoin. History In 1969, an undergrad named John Philipsborn was kicked off the lacrosse team and with the encouragement of the Bowdoin College President Roger Howell, cobbled together a small group of students and men from Portland, Maine, to learn about a sport that at the time was very foreign to most people at Bowdoin. Brunswick is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 21,756 at the 2020 United States Census. Bowdoin College ( ) is a private liberal arts college in Brunswick, Maine. When Bowdoin was chartered in 1794, Maine was still a part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Naval Air Station Brunswick , also known as NAS Brunswick, was a military airport located southeast of Brunswick, Maine, with a number of Navy-operated maritime patrol aircraft.
