Port Tobacco Times
The ''Port Tobacco Times'' was a newspaper published from 1844 to January 14, 1898 in Port Tobacco, Charles County, Maryland. It was founded as a Democratic newspaper by Elijah Wells Jr. and G. W. Hodges. In 1845, the name of the paper was changed to the ''Port Tobacco Times and Charles County Advertiser'' but retained its original founders as editors and publishers. When Union troops were stationed in Port Tobacco at the start of the American Civil War in 1861, Wells had to reassure alarmed pro-Confederate readers that the ''Times'' had not been seized by Union soldiers - rather, he had only allowed the soldiers to borrow his printing equipment to publish a newspaper for the troops stationed nearby. Times Crescent
The ''Times Crescent'' is a newspaper that began publishing on May 26, 1893 and runs to the present day in La Plata, Charles County, Maryland. Walter J. Mitchell, who later became a judge of the Maryland Court of Appeals from 1934-1941, was the man responsible for merging the existing La Plata paper, the ''Crescent'', with the Port Tobacco Times to form the ''Times Crescent'' in 1898. When Mitchell became a judge, his son James C. Mitchell took over operations for the ''Times Crescent'' and remained owner of the paper until his death in 1989. The newspaper went by the name ''Crescent'' from its inception until January 14, 1898, when it was renamed to ''The Times Crescent''. The paper ran under this name until March 24, 1966, when it was briefly changed to ''The Times-Crescent The Charles County Leaf''. Port Tobacco, officially Port Tobacco Village, is a town in Charles County, Maryland, Charles County, in southern Maryland, United States. The population was 13 at the 2010 census, making Port Tobacco the smallest incorporated town in Maryland. Overview This was historically the territory of Algonquian languages, Algonquian-speaking peoples, especially the Potapoco and the more dominant Piscataway tribe, Piscataway. Adrian Posey
Adrian Posey (October 14, 1857 – July 2, 1922) was an American politician, attorney, businessman and newspaper publisher from Charles County, Maryland. Early life Born at Mount Pleasant, the Posey family farm near Allens Fresh, Adrian Posey was one of at least twelve known children born to farmer and grist mill operator, Washington Adrian Posey. Margaret Ellen Hamersley was Mr. Posey's second wife and the mother of five of his children, Adrian being the second oldest of those five. Adrian's paternal great-grandfather, Belain Posey (1737-1791), served as a captain in Colonel Thomas Ewing's Third Battalion of the Flying Camp during the Revolutionary War. The Pope's Creek Subdivision is a CSX Transportation railroad line in Maryland, running from Bowie to Morgantown where the Morgantown Generating Station is located and the Chalk Point Generating Station. History The Pope's Creek Subdivision was originally built by the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad. The company was organized on December 19, 1858, and began surveying the route May 3, 1859. Construction started in 1861 but progressed slowly until 1867, when the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) and its ally, the Northern Central Railway (NCRY), bought the company. La Plata, Maryland
La Plata is a town in Charles County, Maryland, United States. The population was 10,159 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Charles County. History According to an unconfirmed local story, the town was named by one Colonel Samuel Chapman, whose family owned of land in Charles County. The Colonel traveled to South America with his son George, who had contracted tuberculosis, in search of a cure. In his travels, the Colonel had apparently encountered the Río de la Plata, which flows through Argentina and Uruguay, thus naming a portion of his property "La Plata".
