Pop Screen
''Pop Screen'' is a video feature compiling all of R.E.M.'s ''Document'' and ''Green''-era promotional videos. It was released on VHS on July 1, 1990, and on DVD format ( region 1 only) on August 22, 2000, both on the Warner Brothers label. The 35-minute release features promotional videos to all of the band's singles and several album-only tracks from ''Document'' and ''Green''. It also includes the video for "Talk About The Passion" from '' Murmur''. This particular video was made to promote the compilation '' Eponymous'' which was released between ''Document'' and ''Green'', and this is the reason for its otherwise anachronistic inclusion. It includes the uncensored version of "Pop Song 89," which has three topless women dancing along with a topless Michael Stipe. In preparation for television airings, MTV asked Stipe, who directed it himself, to censor the three topless women. Alternative Rock
Alternative rock, or alt-rock, is a category of rock music that emerged from the independent music underground of the 1970s and became widely popular in the 1990s. Mike Mills
Michael Edward Mills (born December 17, 1958) is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer, and composer who was a founding member of the alternative rock band R.E.M. Though known primarily as the bass guitarist and backing vocalist of R.E.M., his musical repertoire also includes keyboards and occasional lead vocals. He contributed to a majority of the band's musical compositions and is the only member to have had formal musical training. Early life Michael Edward Mills was born to Frank and Adora Mills in Orange County, California, where his father was stationed in the Marines. The family moved to Macon, Georgia, when Mills was around six months old. Mills met future R.E.M. bandmate Bill Berry while they attended high school in Macon. The duo started out in bands together. Pop Song 89
"Pop Song 89" is the opening track and third single released from R.E.M.'s sixth studio album ''Green''. It peaked at number 86 on the Hot 100, and in the UK "Stand" was re-released instead. ''Cash Box'' called it a "cynical parody of pop: but said that "it turns out they’ve created a pop hit despite themselves." The video was directed by band frontman Michael Stipe and features him and three women, all of them topless, dancing to the song. Turn You Inside-Out
"Turn You Inside-Out" is a song by American rock band R.E.M. from their sixth studio album ''Green''. Like all tracks on the album, it was written by group members Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Bill Berry. The song's main guitar riff is an inversion of that used in "Finest Worksong". The recording also features percussion from former Sugar Hill Records house drummer Keith LeBlanc. Despite only being released as a single promotionally, it did well on the ''Billboard'' Alternative Songs and Mainstream Rock Tracks charts, placing top ten positions on both charts. A music video for the track was directed by James Herbert, who had previously directed music videos for eight other R.E.M. tracks. In a 1989 live performance of the song, Stipe proclaimed to the audience, "This song goes out to the Exxon Corporation". "Orange Crush" is a song by the American alternative rock band R.E.M. It was released as the first single from the band's sixth studio album, ''Green'', in 1988. It was not commercially released in the U.S. despite reaching number one as a promotional single on both the Mainstream and Modern Rock Tracks (where, at the time, it had the record for longest stay at number one with eight weeks, beating U2). It peaked at number 28 on the UK Singles Chart, making it the band's then-highest chart hit in Britain, where they promoted the song by making their debut appearance on ''Top of the Pops''. The video for the song, directed by Matt Mahurin, won the band its first VMA, for Best Post-Modern Video. "Orange Crush" was also the first song to win in the category. "Finest Worksong" is the third and final single released from R.E.M.'s fifth studio album ''Document''. It peaked at number 50 on the UK Singles Chart in April 1988, at the time the group's highest-charting single in the UK.
