Pomonkey, Maryland
Pomonkey is an unincorporated community located in Charles County, Maryland, United States at the crossing of Livingston and Pomfret Roads, one mile (1.6 km) from Bryans Road. Page 19. History Pomonkey is named for the Pamunkey tribe of Native Americans that lived in the area. The Brent family owned much of the land from before the American Revolutionary War, asserting their claims after Giles Brent married princess Mary Kittamaquund in the 17th century. Robert Brent (1764-1819) became the first mayor of Washington, D.C. (and freed his slaves in his will). In the early 19th century, the village of Bumpy Oak was renamed Pomonkey when it was designated a postal stop. Another Robert Brent (1759-1810) and Dorothy Leigh Brent built a plantation house in this area, which they called Brentfield (which later burned down). Robert Brent
Robert Brent (1764 – September 7, 1819) was the first mayor of Washington City, the future Washington D.C., federal capital of the United States of America. Brent was born into a prominent Catholic family, members of which emigrated to the Maryland colony in the 17th century and for which the Brent Society is named. Early life Brent was born in 1764, on the Woodstock estate in Aquia, Stafford County, Virginia. to parents Robert Brent and Anne Carroll Brent. Indian Head, Maryland
Indian Head is a town in Charles County, Maryland, United States. The population was 3,894 at the 2020 U.S. Census. It has been the site of a naval base specializing in gun and rocket propellants since 1890. Production of nitrocellulose and smokeless powder began at the Indian Head Powder Factory in 1900. The name of the base has varied over the years from Indian Head Proving Ground, to Naval Powder Factory, to Naval Propellant Plant, to Naval Ordnance Station, to the present Naval Support Facility Indian Head. The facility's main tenant activity is the Indian Head Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC/IH). Advanced research in energetic systems takes place at NSWC/IH. La Plata, Maryland
La Plata is a town in Charles County, Maryland, United States. The population was 10,159 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Charles County. History According to an unconfirmed local story, the town was named by one Colonel Samuel Chapman, whose family owned of land in Charles County. The Colonel traveled to South America with his son George, who had contracted tuberculosis, in search of a cure. In his travels, the Colonel had apparently encountered the Río de la Plata, which flows through Argentina and Uruguay, thus naming a portion of his property "La Plata". In the 1870s, a section of the Pennsylvania Railroad had been constructed through the town of La Plata, leading to its 1888 incorporation. Bryans Road, Maryland
Bryans Road is a census-designated place (CDP) in Charles County, Maryland, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 8,650. Bryans Road was named after Oliver Norris Bryan, a 19th-century farmer and scientist who owned and operated Locust Grove Farm near Marshall Hall. The area consisted mostly of tobacco farms until the establishment of the Naval Proving Grounds at Indian Head in 1890. Some commercial establishments came about by the early 1920s, when the name "Bryans Road" first appeared on maps. The construction of Maryland Route 210 (Indian Head Highway) during World War II brought new traffic. By the early 1960s, Bryans Road became an established bedroom community for both Indian Head and Washington. Pomonkey High School
Pomonkey Junior-Senior High School was an all-black high school located in Indian Head, Maryland. From 1966 to 1969, it began to be integrated with the all white schools, Henry E. Lackey High School and La Plata High School. The old Pomonkey High School building was then re-opened as a public middle school in 1970, it was rededicated in 1970 as Matthew Henson Middle School. Joseph Lancaster Brent (November 30, 1826 November 27, 1905) was a lawyer and politician in California, Louisiana and Maryland and a brigadier general in the Confederate army. Personal Joseph Lancaster Brent was born on November 30, 1826, in Pomonkey, Maryland. His parents were Louisiana's U.S. Congressman William Leigh Brent (a Maryland lawyer) and Maryland heiress Marie Fenwick Brent.
