Polo, Barahona
Polo is a municipality of the Barahona Province in southwestern Dominican Republic, known for its green and high mountains and for growing fine coffee. The small town of Polo is also known for having El Polo Magnético (the magnetic pole), an area on a mountain near the village. If a car is stopped at the right place, and put in neutral, the car seems to be rolling up the hill. Rather than being caused by a magnetic field in the surrounding landscape, this phenomenon is produced by the gravity hill A gravity hill, also known as a magnetic hill, mystery hill, mystery spot, gravity road, or anti-gravity hill, is a place where the layout of the surrounding land produces an optical illusion, making a slight downhill slope appear to be an uphi ... optical illusion. Gravity Hill
A gravity hill, also known as a magnetic hill, mystery hill, mystery spot, gravity road, or anti-gravity hill, is a place where the layout of the surrounding land produces an optical illusion, making a slight downhill slope appear to be an uphill slope. Thus, a car left out of gear will appear to be rolling uphill against gravity. Hundreds of gravity hills are recognized worldwide. The slope of gravity hills is an optical illusion, although sites are often accompanied by claims that magnetic or supernatural forces are at work. The most important factor contributing to the illusion is a completely or mostly obstructed horizon. Without a horizon, it becomes difficult for a person to judge the slope of a surface, as a reliable reference is missing. Objects which one would normally assume to be more or less perpendicular to the ground, such as trees, may be leaning, offsetting the visual reference. A 2003 study looked into how the absence of a horizon can skew the perspective on ...

Municipalities Of The Dominican Republic
The municipalities of the Dominican Republic are, after the regions and the provinces, the third level of the political and administrative division of the Dominican Republic. The division of provinces into municipalities (''municipios'') is established in the Constitution and further regulated by Law 5220 on the Territorial Division of the Dominican Republic. It was enacted in 1959 and has been frequently amended to create new provinces, municipalities and lower-level administrative units. Municipalities may be further divided into ''secciones'' (literally: sections) and ''parajes'' (literally: places or neighborhoods). Municipal districts (''distritos municipales'') may be formed in the case of municipalities with several urban centres. Law 176-07 replaced ''Law Nº 3455 de Organización Municipal'' from January, 29, 1953; that had long served as the basis for municipal administration, see The provinces as the second level of political and administrative division contain at lea ...
