Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . There are now both domestic and international competitions in a number of countries, including the Speedway World Cup, whilst the highest overall scoring individual in the Speedway Grand Prix events is pronounced the world champion. Motor Lublin was the name given to several Polish motorcycle speedway teams that existed in the city of Lublin in Poland. In 2017, a new team called Klub Motorowy Cross Lublin was founded and is the current team competing in the Polish leagues from Lublin. Early history Speedway racing in Lublin first took place on 21 September 1947, when Lubelski Klub Motocyklowy organised a friendly tournament. In 1948, local activists led an initiative to build a speedway track. The team's first recorded league match occurred on 18 April 1956. 1956 to 1958 During the 1956 Polish speedway season a Lublin team called Liga Przyjaciół Żołnierza (LPZ) participated in the South Group of the second league, finishing fourth. Orzeł Łódź (''Eagle Lodz'') is a Polish motorcycle speedway team based in Łódź who currently race in the Polish Speedway First League (1. Liga). The club's full name is H. Skrzydlewska Eagle Lodz. Stadium The club hold their meetings at the Moto Arena Łódź, which opened in July 2018. History of speedway in Łódź Tramwajarz Łódź and DKS Łódź Speedway in Łódź began in 1948 with two clubs called Tramwajarz Łódź (tram drivers) and DKS Łódź. Both Tramwajarz and DKS competed in the inaugural 1948 Polish speedway season. Three years later the club moved to Bytom and changed their name to Ogniwo, before returning a year later. Kolejarz Opole (Railwayman Opole) is a motorcycle speedway team based in Opole, Poland. They currently race in the Polish Speedway Second League (2. Liga). History The club race at the Municipal Speedway Stadium or Mariana Spychała Stadium named after a former rider and coach Mariana Spychała. The speedway track was constructed in 1957. On 5 April 1957 the speedway club was officially founded as Klub Sportowy Kolejarz Opole and made its debut in the Polish leagues in 1961. The club's first honour was winning the Polish Speedway First League in 1969 and they went on to win the league three more times in 1974, 1980, 1987. After their 1969 victory they competed in the highest league and won the bronze medal in 1970.
