Polish National Ballet
The Polish National Ballet (PNB) is the largest and the most important ballet company in Poland. It continues a national ballet heritage, which dates to the 17th century. Modernly it was known until 2008 as the ballet of the Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera. In that year the ballet received artistic autonomy reflected in the theatre's by-laws and was elevated to the rank of Polish National Ballet. Since then, its director is Polish choreographer Krzysztof Pastor. Ballet events in Polish history In 1628 a traveling Italian opera troupe created the first ballet performance in Poland. Ballet scenes were then often incorporated into operas held at the court theater. For many years it was foreign dancers who performed. Eventually in 1765 the first permanent ballet company was formed, on the initiative of the king Stanisław II August. Enrico Cecchetti
Enrico Cecchetti (; 21 June 1850 – 13 November 1928) was an Italian ballet dancer, mime, and founder of the Cecchetti method. The son of two dancers from Civitanova Marche, he was born in the costuming room of the ''Teatro Tordinona'' in Rome. After an illustrious career as a dancer in Europe, he went to dance for the Imperial Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia, where he further honed his skills. Cecchetti was praised for his agility and strength in his performances, as well as his technical abilities in dance. By 1888, he was widely accepted as the greatest ballet virtuoso in the world. After an esteemed career in Russia, originating such roles as both the Bluebird and Carabosse in Petipa's masterpiece, '' The Sleeping Beauty'', he turned to teaching. Bronislava Nijinska
Bronislava Nijinska (; pl, Bronisława Niżyńska ; russian: Бронисла́ва Фоми́нична Нижи́нская, Bronisláva Fomínična Nižínskaja; be, Браніслава Ніжынская, Branislava Nižynskaja; – February 21, 1972) was a Polish ballet dancer, and an innovative choreographer. She came of age in a family of traveling, professional dancers. Her own career began in Saint Petersburg. Soon she joined Ballets Russes which ventured to success in Paris. She met war-time difficulties in Petrograd and revolutionary turbulence in Kiev. In France again, public acclaim for her works came quickly, cresting in the 1920s. Nina Novak
Nina Novak (23 March 1923 – 15 March 2022) was a Venezuelan prima ballerina, choreographer, ballet director and dance teacher. Biography Novak was born in Warsaw, Poland on 23 March 1923, as Janina Nowak. She began her study of Ballet at the age of eight at the Warsaw Opera Ballet School. From 1937 to 1939 she was a soloist of the Polish Representative Ballet, and after the war in the ballet groups of Feliks Parnell and Mikołaj Kopiński. In the second half of the 1940s she left for the United States, where she became a prima ballerina, ballet master and teacher at Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo. After finishing her career in 1960s, she left for Venezuela, where she opened her own ballet school, and since 1991 she has been the director of her own ballet school in Caracas, Ballet Clásico de Caracas. Roman Jasinski
Roman Jasinski (1907- 16 April 1991, aged 83-84) was born in Warsaw, Poland and died in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Roman, commonly known as Yasha within the dance community, was a Polish ballet dancer who discovered his love for dance at a very young age. He performed from 1933–1950 with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and then became the ballet master and manager for a smaller company under Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo's concert company. A ''premier danseur'', he was recognized for his elegance and style, in both his dancing and choreography, which was fused with unorthodox ballet movements and port de bras that he learned from previous teachers, such as Balanchine. History The company began in 1996 when the microfilm division of Cedar Rapids-based Crest Information Technologies was sold to Christopher Gill. The microfilm division was responsible at the time for preserving newspapers and for microfilming business documents. Mieczyslaw Pianowski
Mieczyslaw Pianowski was a Polish-American dancer, choreographer, ballet director, and ballet teacher. He was a soloist in Anna Pavlova's company, and he was her ballet master for 13 years. Career Pianowski received his early training at the Warsaw Ballet School in Warsaw, Poland. From 1905 to 1915, he danced with the Warsaw Grand Opera Theater Ballet Company, where he was the main dancer. In 1915, Pianowski went under contract with Sergei Diaghilev's Ballet Russe and remained with the troupe for about 3 years. Pianowski's wife, Sabina, accompanied him while he toured with the Ballet Russe. Pianowski met Ana Pavlova in 1918 while touring with the Italian Opera Company in Santiago Chile. It was said that Pavlova was impressed by him, and he subsequently became a soloist and assistant in her company. Leon Woizikovsky originally Léon Wójcikowski (February 20, 1899 - February 23, 1975) was a Polish dancer and ballet master, and later choreographer and teacher. He first came to prominence as a member of the Ballets Russes. Later he worked with various ballet companies, e.g., Pavlova, de Basil, de Valois, Ballet Polonaise, Massine, the London Festival, the Royal Flemish. Stanislas Idzikowski
Stanislas Idzikowski (1894 – 12 February 1977) was a Polish dancer and ballet master, active in England, and with such historic companies as Pavlova's, Ballets Russes, and Vic-Wells. During his performance career, 1910-1933, he became famous for his brilliant classical technique, and for the development of ballet roles. With Beaumont he co-authored an influential book on the Cecchetti Method, still in print. He later taught dance in London.
