The Police Officer Michael J. Califano Memorial Bridge is a highway overpass in East Hills and Old Westbury in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. It carries Glen Cove Road (Nassau County Route 1) over the Long Island Expressway (Interstate 495). It is named in honor of Michael J. Califano, a police officer who was killed nearby in the line of duty. Description The bridge was built in 2000, replacing an older span. It is of a steel stringer design. It is long, and is owned and maintained by the New York State Department of Transportation. In 2011, the bridge was named the Police Officer Michael J. Califano Memorial Bridge in honor of Officer Michael Califano, who was killed on the line of duty nearby when a truck crashed into his vehicle. Glen Cove Road (also known as Guinea Woods Road) is a , major north–south thoroughfare running through north-central Nassau County on Long Island, New York, in the United States. It is the main road leading to the communities on the east shore of Hempstead Harbor. The portion south of the North Hempstead– Oyster Bay town line is the unsigned County Route 1 (CR 1), while the portion north of the town line until its intersection with NY 107 is designated as New York State Route 900B (NY 900B), an unsigned reference route, New York State Route 107 (NY 107), and County Route 243 (CR 243), an unsigned county route. North Hempstead is one of three towns in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 237,639 at the 2020 census. History The area was first settled by Europeans around 1643 and became part of the town of Hempstead. During the American Revolution the southern part of Hempstead was primarily Tory, while the northern part, having been settled by Yankees, supported the revolution. Following the war, the Town of North Hempstead was split off in 1784. Dean George Skelos (born February 16, 1948) is an American former politician from Long Island, New York. A Republican, Skelos served in the New York State Assembly and later represented the Ninth District in the New York State Senate from 1985 through 2015.
