Piuro (''Piür'' in the Chiavenna, local dialect) is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Sondrio in the Italy, Italian region Lombardy, located about north of Milan and about northwest of Sondrio, on the border with Switzerland. Madesimo
Madesimo (, called Isolato until 1983) is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Sondrio in the Italian region Lombardy, located about north of Milan and about northwest of Sondrio, on the border with Switzerland. Madesimo borders the following municipalities: Campodolcino, Ferrera (Switzerland), Medels im Rheinwald (Switzerland), Mesocco (Switzerland), Piuro, Splügen (Switzerland), Sufers (Switzerland). Madesimo, one of the best towns in the Italian Alps, is a popular place for winter sports and summer holidays, and offers a variety of slopes and hills for both skiing and snowboarding. It features over 30 slopes which range from beginners to expert level. Among the slopes present in Madesimo is the Canalone, an off-the-track slope considered to be one of the most challenging in the Alps. Val Bregaglia
The Val Bregaglia ( lmo, Val Bregaja; german: Bergell, ; rm, ) is an alpine valley of Switzerland and Italy at the base of which runs the river Mera ( lmo, Maira in Switzerland). Most of the valley falls within the Swiss district of Maloja in the canton of the Grisons, the lower part within the Italian province of Sondrio. The valley includes the Swiss former municipalities of Vicosoprano, Stampa, Bondo, Soglio and Castasegna (now consolidated into the municipality of Bregaglia); and the Italian municipalities of Villa di Chiavenna, Piuro, and Chiavenna. The Swiss part of the valley is inhabited by the descendants of Italian Protestants, some descending from those who settled here in the mid-16th century to avoid persecution by the Inquisition, and today about 75% of the population is Protestant.
