Playland Café
The Playland Café (1937–1998), located at 21 Essex Street in Boston, Massachusetts, was Boston's oldest gay bar.According to ''Improper Bostonians'', the bar opened in 1938. According to the owner, as reported in a ''Boston Globe'' story (Kindleberger, 1998), it opened in 1937. History According to Paul Staffier, when his father Rocco Staffier opened Playland in 1937 it was not a gay bar, but by the start of World War II it had begun attracting a gay clientele. When the bar closed in 1998, Staffier, who had run Playland for 40 years, said that it was not the "den of iniquity" it was reputed to be, and that arrests had been rare. Mark Doty
Mark Doty (born August 10, 1953) is an American poet and memoirist best known for his work ''My Alexandria.'' He was the winner of the National Book Award for Poetry in 2008. Early life Mark Doty was born in Maryville, Tennessee to Lawrence and Ruth Doty, with an older sister, Sarah Alice Doty. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and received his Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont. Career Doty's first collection of poems, ''Turtle, Swan'', was published by David R. Godine in 1987; a second collection, ''Bethlehem in Broad Daylight'', appeared from the same publisher in 1991. Jacques Cabaret (also stylized as Jacque's Cabaret), located at 79 Broadway in Boston, Massachusetts, is Boston's oldest continuously operating gay bar. The bar is known for its nightly drag shows and as the venue where drag performer Katya Zamolodchikova got her start hosting her popular monthly burlesque show, Perestroika. History Nightclub operator Henry Vara opened the bar in 1938 under the name Jacques Restaurant. By the mid-1940s it had become a gay bar. In 1967 Vara opened The Other Side across the street, taking over the liquor license of the Punch Bowl, another gay bar that had closed down.
