Jacques Cabaret
Jacques Cabaret (also stylized as Jacque's Cabaret), located at 79 Broadway in Boston, Massachusetts, is Boston's oldest continuously operating gay bar. The bar is known for its nightly drag shows and as the venue where drag performer Katya Zamolodchikova got her start hosting her popular monthly burlesque show, Perestroika. History Nightclub operator Henry Vara opened the bar in 1938 under the name Jacques Restaurant. By the mid-1940s it had become a gay bar. In 1967 Vara opened The Other Side across the street, taking over the liquor license of the Punch Bowl, another gay bar that had closed down. Vara was a prolific nightclub owner, at one time holding the most liquor licenses in Boston; he was also the owner of the Kenmore Club in Boston, Studio 54 in New York City, and several more bars in other states. Studio 54 is a Broadway theater and a former disco nightclub at 254 West 54th Street in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. Operated by the Roundabout Theatre Company, Studio 54 has 1,006 seats on two levels. The theater was designed by Eugene De Rosa for producer Fortune Gallo and opened in 1927 as the Gallo Opera House. The current Broadway theater is named after a nightclub on the same site, founded by Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, which operated within the theater's space in the late 1970s and the 1980s. Plans for the Gallo Opera House announced in 1926, and it opened on November 8, 1927, as a legitimate theater and opera house for the San Carlo Grand Opera Company. Boston Pride is an annual LGBTQ pride event held in Boston, Massachusetts. As of 2019 it was the 22nd largest pride event in the world and alleged by organizers to be the third-largest pride parade in the United States. History 1970s Boston Pride began in June 1970, when a small group of about 50 gay and lesbian activists marched from Cambridge Common to Boston Common, where they held a rally commemorating the Stonewall riots. On June 26, 1971, about 300 people attended the first official Boston Pride March, which stopped at four locations in the city: Jacque's (a drag bar), the Boston police headquarters, the Massachusetts State House, and St. Paul's Cathedral.
