Play The Game (American Game Show)
''Play the Game'', also known as ''Let's Play the Game'', was one of the earliest game shows to be broadcast over an American television network, and the first known example of a television panel show. In 1941-42, CBS aired an early game show, ''CBS Television Quiz''. Broadcast history ''Play the Game'' was essentially a televised version of the parlor game charades. The show was hosted by Dr. Harvey Zorbaugh, professor of educational sociology at New York University. The show aired over the DuMont Television Network on Tuesdays from 8 to 8:30 pm ET from September 24, 1946, to December 17, 1946. The show also aired on ABC from August 20, 1948, to November 6, 1948, in primetime. A previous version of the program had been broadcast locally in New York City on WNBT Channel 1 (the predecessor to WNBC-TV) in 1941. Harvey Zorbaugh
Harvey Warren Zorbaugh (September 20, 1896 – January 21, 1965) was Professor of Educational Sociology, at New York University. he was born in East Cleveland, Ohio and educated in sociology at the University of Chicago. He married Geraldine Elizabeth Bone on September 7, 1929, and they had two children: a son, Harvey Jr., and a daughter, Harriet. His classic text, first published in 1929, was ''The Gold Coast and the Slum'', a book based on his PhD thesis completed under the direction of Robert E. Park at the University of Chicago. In the late 1940s, Dr. Zorbaugh also hosted one of the first game shows on American TV. Titled '' Play the Game'', the show aired from September 24, 1946 to December 17, 1946 (DuMont, primetime) and from August 20, 1948 to November 6, 1948 (ABC, primetime). List Of Surviving DuMont Television Network Broadcasts
The DuMont Television Network was launched in 1946 and ceased broadcasting in 1956. Allen DuMont, who created the network, preserved most of what it produced in kinescope format. By 1958, however, much of the library had been destroyed to recover the silver content of the film prints, and eventually the remaining material was simply discarded. Since then, there has been extensive research on which DuMont programs have episodes extant. Ballantine Books is a major book publisher located in the United States, founded in 1952 by Ian Ballantine with his wife, Betty Ballantine. It was acquired by Random House in 1973, which in turn was acquired by Bertelsmann in 1998 and remains part of that company today. Ballantine's original logo was a pair of mirrored letter Bs back to back, while its current logo is two Bs stacked to form an elaborate gate. ''Let's Play Reporter'' was an early American television series. It was an experimental test program broadcast on May 23, May 30 and June 6, 1946. Presumably intended to try out a new concept on television, it was produced by the American Broadcasting Company but aired on DuMont Television Network station WABD-TV WNYW (channel 5) is a television station in New York City, serving as the flagship of the Fox network.
