(German, literally ''Lake of/near Plau'') is a lake in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, located at . Its surface is approximately 38.4 km2 and its maximum depth is . Location The Plauer See is flowed through by the river Elde from east to west and is part of the "Bundeswasserstraße Müritz-Elde-Wasserstraße" with waterway class I; the "Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsamt Lauenburg" is responsible. The Global Nature Fund awarded the water body the title ''Lebendiger See des Jahres 2011''. With an area of 38.4 km2, the Plauer See is the third largest lake in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the seventh largest in Germany. It has a north–south extension of around 14 kilometres, a maximum width of 5 kilometres and an average depth of 6.8 metres. It has connections via the Elde to the Fleesensee, the Kölpinsee and the Müritz in the east and to the river Elbe in the west. Plau Am See
Plau am See () is a town in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. It is situated 28 km east of Parchim, and 29 km west of Waren. Around 1235 the city was called Plawe, that being the Polabian field name for the place where rafting is practiced. The name lasted until the 16th century and was then written according to its German phonetic form Plau. On 11 January 1994, the name of the city was modified by the addition of ''am See'' (on Lake) to remove confusion with the similarly named towns of Plaue, Plauen and Plaue. At the edge of town, there is a protected forest habitat named Plauer Stadtwald (literally: Plau city forest). Among the sights in town are a historic church building, the ruins of the Burg Plau castle and a bridge that may be vertically lifted to allow boats on the channel below to pass through. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (MV; ; nds, Mäkelborg-Vörpommern), also known by its anglicized name Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania, is a state in the north-east of Germany. The Elde () is a river in northern Germany (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and a few km in Brandenburg), a right tributary of the Elbe. Its total length is . The Elde originates near Altenhof, south of Malchow. It first flows southeast towards the southern end of Lake Müritz, which it enters at Vipperow. It flows out of the Müritz at its northern end, near Waren. It turns west, and flows through a series of small lakes, and along the town of Malchow, until the Plauer See. It flows out of the Plauer See at Plau am See, and continues west and southwest through Lübz, Parchim, Neustadt-Glewe, Grabow and Eldena, and flows into the Elbe at Dömitz. Müritz
The Müritz (; from Slavic "little sea") is a lake in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, northern Germany. Its area is , which makes it the second largest lake in Germany (after Lake Constance) and the largest lake located entirely within German territory. Its maximum depth is . It is fed and drained by the river Elde. Part of the Müritz and adjacent forests and wetlands are protected by the Müritz National Park. The former Müritz district was named after the lake. The biggest towns bordering the lake are Waren (Müritz) and Röbel, both major centres of tourism in the Mecklenburg Lake District.
