The Cow Neck Peninsula is a peninsula in Nassau County, New York, on the North Shore of Long Island. Description The Cow Neck Peninsula was named Cow Neck in the 17th Century, in large part due to the fact that it served as a common pasture at the time. The Cow Neck Peninsula is famous for its affluence and historic communities, and was famous for its sand mines along Hempstead Harbor throughout the 20th Century. Matthias Nicoll
Matthias Nicoll (1630 – December 22, 1687), a.k.a. Nicolls, was the sixth mayor of New York City from 1672 to 1673. He is the patriarch of the Nicoll family, which settled and owned much of Long Island, New York. Numerous place names on the island now bear the Nicoll name. Early life Nicoll was born in 1627 and was son of a minister. He lived in Islip, Northamptonshire, and practiced law there. Life in America In 1664, he came to the North America with Richard Nicolls. It is not known if the two were related, although some sources say he was Richard's nephew. Matthias was Richard's secretary and was present to the first surrender of the Dutch New Amsterdam to the English. He was clerk of the court in the new English colony and served various judge roles. Plandome Heights is a village in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. It is considered part of the Greater Manhasset area, which is anchored by Manhasset. The population was 1,005 at the 2010 census. The Incorporated Village of Plandome Heights is located entirely within the Town of North Hempstead and is the southernmost of the three Plandomes. Interlaken, New York
Interlaken is a village in Seneca County, New York, United States. The population was 602 at the 2010 census. The name is related to the village's position between two lakes. The Village of Interlaken is in the northern part of the Town of Covert and is northwest of Ithaca, New York. History First settled in the late 1790s and early 1800s, the Village of Interlaken was home to many families from the New England and New Jersey areas. Port Washington is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) on the Cow Neck Peninsula in the Town of North Hempstead, in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York. The hamlet is the anchor community of the Greater Port Washington area. The population was 15,846 at the 2010 census. History Much of the Port Washington area was initially settled by colonists in 1644, after they purchased land from the people of the Matinecock Nation. In the 1870s, Port Washington became an important sand-mining town; it had the largest sandbank east of the Mississippi and easy barge access to Manhattan.
