Plan For The Metropolitan Region, Perth And Fremantle
The 1955 ''Plan for the Metropolitan Region, Perth and Fremantle'' (also known as the ''Stephenson,'' or ''Stephenson-Hepburn Report'') was prepared for the Government of Western Australia by Gordon Stephenson and Alistair Hepburn. The plan was the first regional plan for Perth, and provided the basis for land use zoning under the Metropolitan Region Scheme. Even though not every recommendation of the report was adopted it is considered to have provided the underlying template for the modern development of Perth. The plan was superseded by the '' Corridor Plan for Perth'' in 1970. Background The 1928 Town Planning & Development Act provided for local authorities to prepare a town planning scheme, but did not include provisions for the creation of any overarching regional scheme. In 1952, the report of an Honorary Royal Commission of the Legislative Council recommended metropolitan planning for the centres of Perth and Fremantle. This led to the commissioning of architect Gor ...

Urban Planning In Australia
Urban planning in Australia has a significant role to play in ensuring the future sustainability of Australian cities. Australia is one of the most highly urbanised societies in the world. Continued population growth in Australian cities is placing increasing pressure on infrastructure, such as public transport and roadways, energy, air and water systems within the urban environment. Urban planning is undertaken at all levels of Government in Australia. However, the Federal Government is playing an increasing part in setting policy as part of an overall response to developing climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. The local government has also been engaging with the community to make decisions on urban planning designs that help to promote social cohesion. Over the past few decades Australians have developed a respect for urban heritage places and community groups have fought hard to stop developers from destroying them. History Urban planning in Australia has evolved sinc ...

Colonial Town Plans Of Perth
:''This article details the colonial town plans that guided the development of the initial Perth town site in the Swan River Colony. This is now the central city area of the Perth Metropolitan Region.'' The 1829 town plan of Perth, Western Australia was an elongated grid pattern that reflected the city planning principles of the day, and was typical of colonial Williamsburg (1699) and the Edinburgh "new town" (1768).Proudfoot, Helen (1996). ''Town plans their impact on the settlement process of Australia (1788 - 1849)'', Macquarie University, PHD Thesis The plan expressed enlightenment principles of the town as the seat of civic power within a large and productive agricultural hinterland. Contrary to these ideals, Perth became the commercial center of the colony, and later, metropolitan region with a layout that has remained relatively unchanged to the present day. Instructions for the planning of Perth Land settlement in Australia generally followed the following process: La ...

Melbourne Metropolitan Planning Scheme 1954
The Melbourme Metropolitan Planning Scheme 1954 was prepared for the Government of Victoria by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works. The scheme was approved in 1958 by the Board of Works, but did not become legally enforceable until 1968 when it was gazetted by the Minister for Local Government. The report recommended, amongst other things, a system of broad land-use zoning, a network of freeways and bypasses, and the regional allocation of public open space. The scheme identified five district centres of Footscray, Preston, Box Hill, Moorabbin and Dandenong. Local government authorities prepared local planning schemes which were intended to align with the Metropolitan Scheme's broad zones, but which frequently did not.{{Cite journal, last=Tsutsumi, first=Jun, last2=Wyatt, first2=Ray, date=2006, title=A brief history of metropolitan planning in Melbourne, Australia, url=https://www.researchgate.net/publication/251001568_A_brief_history_of_metropolitan_planning_in_Melbourne ...

Greater London Plan
The Greater London Plan of 1944 was developed by Patrick Abercrombie (1879–1957). The plan was directly related to the County of London Plan written by John Henry Forshaw (1895–1973) and Abercrombie in 1943. Following World War II, London was presented with an opportunity to amend the perceived failings of unplanned and haphazard development that had occurred as a result of rapid industrialisation in the nineteenth century. During the Second World War, the Blitz had destroyed large urban areas throughout the entire county of London, but particularly the central core. Over 50,000 inner London homes were completely destroyed, while more than 2 million dwellings experienced some form of bomb damage. This presented the London County Council with a unique chance to plan and rebuild vacant tracts of the city on a scale not seen since the Great Fire of London. The plan was based around five main issues facing London at the time: *Population growth *Housing *Employment and indust ...

Council House, Perth
Council House is a 13-storey office building on St Georges Terrace in Perth, Western Australia. Located beside Stirling Gardens and Government House in the city's central business district, the building was designed by Howlett and Bailey Architects and opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1963, after Perth hosted the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. For most of its history, it has served as the headquarters for the City of Perth. Built in a modernist style, the building has been the subject of vigorous public debate about its heritage value. Some parties, such as the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, consider the building to be an important example of modernist architecture in the city, whilst others consider it ugly. These conflicting views led to animosity in the 1990s, when the State Government refused to heritage list the property, and instead recommended its demolition. Despite this, the City of Perth opted to renovate the tower and keep it as its headquarter ...
