Kwinana Oil Refinery
Kwinana Oil Refinery was sited on the shore of Cockburn Sound at Kwinana, near Fremantle, Western Australia. Built by the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company and completed in 1955, it was the largest oil refinery in Australia, with a capacity of . It was closed by BP in March 2021 to be converted to an import-only terminal. Coogee, Western Australia
Coogee is a southern coastal suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Cockburn. History The suburb takes its name from the lake, Lake Coogee, in the area, which translates to "Body of water" in the native Aboriginal Nyoongar language. Originally this lake was named Lake Munster after Prince William, the Earl of Munster, and later King William IV. The Aboriginal name ''Kou-gee'' was recorded in 1841 by Thomas Watson and has been variously spelt ''Koojee, Coojee'' and ''Coogee''. Parmelia Bank
Parmelia Bank is a sandbank to the north of Cockburn Sound, off Fremantle, Western Australia within the limits of the Fremantle Outer Harbour. The Parmelia Bank is named after the barque ''Parmelia'', which grounded on the sandbank in 1829. Parmelia Bank, south of Success Bank, is a slightly smaller bank than the latter and runs approximately parallel to it, about further south extending from Woodman Point, almost to Carnac Island; it also is within the designated Fremantle Outer Harbour. The channel through this bank is likewise named after the bank - Parmelia Channel that leads into Cockburn Sound. During World War II, Parmelia Bank was the location of the anti-submarine boom net protecting the northern access to Cockburn Sound. Success Bank is a sandbank to the north of Cockburn Sound, off Fremantle, Western Australia within the limits of the Fremantle Outer Harbour. The bank lies to the west of Owen Anchorage. It is about deep and is just to the south of the main shipping channel of Gage Roads. Success Bank was named by Captain James Stirling after his ship , which was used for a preliminary exploration of the Swan River region in 1827. Henderson is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Cockburn. History The suburb of Henderson comprises land resumed by the Commonwealth Government in 1915 for defence purposes. A large naval base was planned by Admiral Sir Reginald Henderson, and the area was sometimes referred to as "Henderson Naval Base". The name was approved for the suburb in 1973.
