Piwnica Pod Baranami
The Piwnica pod Baranami ( en, The Basement, or the Cellar under the Rams) is a Polish literary cabaret located in Kraków, Poland. For over thirty years, in the People's Republic of Poland, Piwnica pod Baranami served as the most renowned political cabaret in the country, until the end of (and beyond) History of Poland (1945-1989), the communist era. Created by Piotr Skrzynecki in 1956, the cabaret continues its activities, contrary to rumours that it has been closed after the death of its founder in 1997. It resides at its original location in the medieval Kraków Old Town, Old Town district, at Main Market Square, Kraków, the Main Market Square (next to Vis-á-vis café). At first, the facility was a meeting place for Kraków students. Barbara Nawratowicz
Barbara Nawratowicz-Stuart (born 10 November 1932) is a Polish actress and radio journalist. She was one of the first stars of Piwnica pod Baranami cabaret and a long-time presenter at Polish section of Radio Free Europe. Biography She studied law at Maria Curie-Skłodowska, Jagiellonian and Warsaw University and graduated in 1956. In 1951, during the first year of the college, she was imprisoned by the Ministry of Public Security. She has been kept in a small, dark cell for three months, being multiply interrogated and beaten by the officiers. After letting free she has been interrogated several times more. In 1952 or 1953 she met Piotr Skrzynecki, a student of art history at the Jagiellonian University. This is how she first made a contact with a group of people who few years later started a cabaret Piwnica pod Baranami in the basement of one of town houses at Rynek. Stanisław Radwan
Stanisław Radwan (10 March 1939 – 14 October 2023) was a Polish composer. Life and career Born in Bieńkówka, the son of an organist, Radwan studied piano and composition at the Academy of Music in Kraków under Krzysztof Penderecki. He later got a scholarship to study in Paris, where he enrolled in courses given by Pierre Schaeffer and Olivier Messiaen. Starting from 1960, he penned over 200 compositions for theatre and cabaret, and served as the musical director at the Ateneum Theatre in Warsaw from 1963 to 1966, and as the theatre director of the Helena Modrzejewska National Old Theater in Krakow from 1980 to 1990. His collaborations include Andrzej Wajda, Konrad Swinarski, Jerzy Jarocki, Krystian Lupa, Zygmunt Hübner, Tadeusz Bradecki. Zygmunt Konieczny (born 3 January 1937) is a Polish composer of theatre and film music. Zygmunt Konieczny spent his childhood in the village of Szczyrzyc. Krzysztof Trzciński (27 April 1931 – 23 April 1969), known professionally as Krzysztof Komeda, was a Polish film music composer and jazz pianist. Perhaps best known for his work in film scores, Komeda wrote the scores for Roman Polanski’s films '' Knife in the Water'' (1962), '' Cul-de-sac'' (1966), '' The Fearless Vampire Killers'' (1967), and '' Rosemary’s Baby'' (1968). Jan Güntner (born 17 June 1931) is a Polish stage and film actor and director. Biography He graduated from the State College of Acting in Kraków in 1953. Since the beginning of Piwnica pod Baranami activity in 1958 he was a regular participant of the cabaret, he was the first to declaim poems by his friend Andrzej Bursa on the stage.
