Pirallahı, Baku
Pirallahı is a village in the municipality of Gürgən-Pirallahı in the Khazar raion of Baku, Azerbaijan. It is located on Pirallahi Island. As of 1968, the town had a population of 14,400. The former name of this place was ''Artyom'', named after Fyodor Sergeyev (''nom de guerre'' Artem or Artyom). Previously, it was named in honor of the 26 Baku Commissars. Pirallahı is a port town, and oil and gas are important to the local economy. Pirallahi Island or Pirallakhi Island (Azeri: ''Pirallahı adası'') is an island in the Caspian Sea. The island is part of Azerbaijan, and is located right off the northeastern shore of the Apsheron Peninsula, to the ENE of Baku. The island is long and has a maximum width of . Fyodor Andreyevich Sergeyev (, ; March 19, 1883 – July 24, 1921), better known as Comrade Artyom (), was a Russian Bolshevik revolutionary, Soviet politician, agitator, and journalist. 26 Baku Commissars
The 26 Baku Commissars were Bolshevik and Left Socialist Revolutionary (SR) members of the Baku Commune. The commune was established in the city of Baku, which was then the capital of the briefly independent Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, and is now the capital of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The commune, led by Stepan Shahumyan, existed until 26 July 1918 when the Bolsheviks were forced out of power by a coalition of Dashnaks, Right SRs, and Mensheviks.
