Piotta is a village in the municipality of Quinto in the Swiss canton of Ticino. Geography The village, located next to the neighbrouring Ambrì, lies in the Leventina Valley, below the Lepontine Alps, and is crossed in the middle by Ticino river. It is 3 km far from Quinto, 5 from Airolo and 52 from Bellinzona. Transport Piotta is the location of the base station of the Ritom funicular, linking the village to Ritom Lake. Along with the neighbouring village of Ambrì, Piotta is served by the infrequently served Ambrì-Piotta railway station on the Gotthard railway, and is located close to Ambri Airport. Ambri Airport, french: Aéroport de Ambri, it, Aeroporto di Ambrì ( :ICAO: LSPM) is a Swiss general aviation airport. It located near the village of Ambrì, in the municipality of Quinto, canton of Ticino. Ambri serves the surrounding area and is home to a gliding school, a helicopter base and has sufficiency for VFR flying. The airport is situated in the steep-sided alpine valley of the Ticino river. Ambrì
Ambrì is a Swiss village in the municipality of Quinto, Leventina District, Canton of Ticino. Geography Ambrì is located in the Leventina Valley, upon the southwestern shore of Ticino river and below the Lepontine Alps, next to the neighboring village of Piotta. Other villages close to Ambrì are Rodi and Fiesso. It is 2 km far from Quinto, 7 from Airolo and 50 from Bellinzona. Sports The village is known throughout Switzerland for being home to National League (NL) team HC Ambrì-Piotta, that plays in the 6,500-seat Valascia, but is set to move into a new arena by 2021. Hockey Club Ambrì-Piotta is a Switzerland, Swiss professional ice hockey club and a member of the National League (ice hockey), National League (NL). The club was founded September 19, 1937, and is also known as "Bianco-Blu" (English: white and blues). The Gotthard railway (german: Gotthardbahn; it, Ferrovia del Gottardo) is the Swiss trans-alpine railway line from northern Switzerland to the canton of Ticino. The line forms a major part of an important international railway link between northern and southern Europe, especially on the Rotterdam-Basel-Genoa corridor. Lago Ritom
__NOTOC__ Lago Ritom is a lake in the Piora valley, Ticino, Switzerland. The natural lake is used as a reservoir by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB-CFF-FFS) to generate hydro-electric power for the Gotthard line. The first dam was built in 1918 and, in 1950, its height was increased by 23 m. Overview The lake's surface area is 1.49 km² at an elevation of 1850 m. With Lake Cadagno and Lago di Tom, it is one of the main lakes in the Piora valley. Before being used as a reservoir, Lake Ritom was a meromictic lake similar to the nearby Lake Cadagno. Ritom Funicular
The Ritom funicular ( it, Funicolare del Ritom) is a funicular railway in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. It links a lower terminus at Piotta, in the valley of the Ticino River near the southern portal of the Gotthard Tunnel, with an upper terminus at Piora, a walk from Ritom Lake. There is also an intermediate stop at Altanca. History The Ritom Lake is in fact a reservoir, constructed in 1917 in order collect the waters of the Saint-Gotthard Massif for a power station at Piotta, in order to produce electricity for the Gotthard railway. The funicular was originally constructed to facilitate the building of the pipeline carrying this water, which it parallels, but was opened for public use in 1921. Leventina Valley
The Leventina District is one of the eight districts of the largely Italian-speaking canton of Ticino in Switzerland. The capital of the district is Faido but the largest town is Airolo on the southern flank of the Gotthard Pass. Situated to the north of the canton, its territory covers the area of the Ticino River as far south as Biasca, in particular the Bedretto Valley and the Leventina Valley.
