Piota
The Piota is an Apennine torrent in the Province of Alessandria, north-west Italy. Geography The Piota passes through the territory of the communes of Bosio, Casaleggio Boiro, Lerma, Tagliolo Monferrato, Silvano d'Orba and Rocca Grimalda. As a tributary of the Orba, the Piota falls within the Po basin. The river's source is on the Piedmontese flank of Monte Pracaban and its course takes it through the wild landscapes of the Ligurian Apennine that form the Parco Regionale delle Capanne di Marcarolo. Having been joined by the Gorzente, the Piota enters the Orba near Silvano d'Orba. Gorzente
The Gorzente is an Apennine torrent of the Po basin in north-west Italy. A tributary of the Piota, it flows through the territory of the communes of Campomorone, Bosio, Mornese, Casaleggio Boiro, Lerma and Tagliolo Monferrato. Course The source, on the border between Piedmont and Liguria, is Lago Bruno which, at an elevation of above sea level, is the lowest of the three linked Laghi del Gorzente. Its upper course takes the Gorzente in a north-westerly direction through the wild and uninhabited landscape between Monte delle Figne, elevation , and Monte Tobbio, which for the most part falls within the Parco Regionale delle Capanne di Marcarolo, until it is dammed to form the two lakes known as the Laghi di Lavagnina. From here its course turns to the west and the river flows into the Piota at Case Possidenti, a locality of Tagliolo Monferrato. Orba (river)
The Orba is a torrent ( it, torrente — a stream whose flow shows a very marked seasonal variation) of northern Italy. Toponimy ''Orba'' is a toponym which is quite frequent in Europe, especially in Italy, France and Spain in a variety of different forms and spelling. The name has a Celtic origin related with Celtic mythology and as toponym is often associated with rivers whose sand were found to be rich in gold. Geography Orba c. 70 km course runs northwards through Piedmont from its springs in the Apennines (from the northern slopes of Monte Reixa) to its confluence with the Bormida, a right tributary of the Po. The Orba flows from a mountain region, where there are attractive villages such as Tiglieto, Molare and then it comes to Monferrato's hills. Parco Regionale Delle Capanne Di Marcarolo
The Capanne di Marcarolo Natural Regional Park (in Italian ''Parco naturale delle Capanne di Marcarolo'') is a natural park in the province of Alessandria (Piedmont, Italy). It gets the name from a small village in the protected area, ''Capanne di Marcarolo''. History Some artificial lakes located in the park as Laghi del Gorzente were built from the end of 19th century in order to provide the city of Genova and its surrounding area with electricity and good quality freshwater. In 1944's spring a group of Italian partisans were surrounded by fascist and nazi troops on Monte Tobbio. After a fight some of them managed to break the blockade while some others were captured, transferred near Benedicta Abbey and executed by firing squads on 7 April 1944. Rocca Grimalda
Rocca Grimalda (''Ra Roca'' in dialect) is a village and ''comune'' in the province of Alessandria, Piedmont, Northern Italy. It lies in Upper Montferrat, a historical region of Piedmont, and it was built upon a rocky hill on the Orba's left bank, very close to Ovada. The nearest airport is the Cristoforo Colombo Airport in Genoa.
