Pilo Peristeri
Pilo Peristeri (10 December 1909 – 5 August 2009) was an Albanian politician of the Albanian Party of Labour (PPSh). Biography Peristeri was born in Korçë, at that time still part of the Ottoman Empire to an Albanian family of the Eastern Orthodox rite. Initially he worked as a tinsmith, and later as professional soccer player. He was involved with the Communist Group of Korçë, one of the earliest in Albania. He was one of the founding members of the Albanian Communist Party in 1941, and took an active part in World War II as a partisan of the National Liberation Movement (LANC). After the founding of the People's Republic of Albania on 11 January 1946, Peristeri was elected in the People's Assembly (Alb: ''Kuvendi Popullor'') in 1950. Enver Hoxha
Enver Halil Hoxha ( , ; 16 October 190811 April 1985) was an Albanian communist politician who was the authoritarian ruler of Albania from 1944 until his death in 1985. He was First Secretary of the Party of Labour of Albania from 1941 until his death in 1985. He was also a member of the Politburo of the Party of Labour of Albania, chairman of the Democratic Front of Albania, and commander-in-chief of the armed forces and ruled the country from 1944 until his death in 1985. He was the 22nd Prime Minister of Albania from 1944 to 1954 and at various times was both foreign minister and defence minister of the People's Socialist Republic of Albania. Hoxha was born in Gjirokastër in 1908 and became a grammar school teacher in 1936. Tirana
Tirana ( , ; aln, Tirona) is the capital and largest city of Albania. It is located in the centre of the country, enclosed by mountains and hills with Dajti rising to the east and a slight valley to the northwest overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the distance. Due to its location at the Plain of Tirana and the close proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, the city is particularly influenced by a Mediterranean seasonal climate. Fall Of Communism In Albania
The fall of Communism in Albania, the last such event in Europe outside the Soviet Union, started in December 1990 with student demonstrations in the capital, Tirana, although protests started in January that year in other cities like Shkodra and Kavaja. The Central Committee of the communist Party of Labour of Albania allowed political pluralism on 11 December and the largest opposition party, the Democratic Party, was founded the next day. March 1991 elections left the Party of Labour in power, but a general strike and urban opposition led to the formation of a "stability government" that included non-communists. Rita Marko
Rita Marko (17 February 1920 – 15 June 2018) was an Albanian political figure of Aromanian ethnicity who served in a number of positions in Albania during its socialist period. Biography Marko was born in Korçë as the son of Eastern Orthodox ethnic Aromanian parents and attended grammar school. In 1936 he partook in a strike of petroleum workers organized by the ''Puna'' (''Work'') trade union in the area, which was associated with the Korçë Communist Group. He joined the resistance forces after the Italian invasion of Albania in 1939 and joined the Communist Party of Albania (from 1948 the Party of Labour of Albania) in 1942. Manush Myftiu
Manush Myftiu (16 January 1919 – 20 October 1997) was an Albanian politician during the country's socialist period. He served in a number of positions, most recently as the deputy prime minister. Early life Myftiu was born in Vlora to a family of Albanian Muslim landowners. In 1939 he graduated from a Classical Lycée in Rome and while in his hometown joined a communist cell. From 1940 to 1941 he studied at the Medical Faculty of the University of Turin but did not complete his studies, returning to Vlora where he was obliged to join the Albanian Fascist Youth.
