Pilkhana, Bangladesh
Pilkhana is a para-military cantonment in Dhaka. It is the headquarters of Border Guard Bangladesh, located to the south of Dhanmondi in Dhaka of Bangladesh. Etymology The word ''Pilkhana'' means "stable of elephants". Pilkhana is not officially named in any record of Dhaka City Corporation, but this is the popular name of this place as elephants are a part of its history (''pil'' means "elephant" and ''khana'' means "home"). History During the 16th century AD, in the period of the Mughal Empire, Pilkhana was a jungle place and was used as the grazing area for the royal elephants, its stable housing no less than 300 elephants. Later, during the period of East India Company administration, the company employees used to tame freshly caught untamed elephants. Paribagh
Paribagh is a neighborhood of Dhaka. It is situated in the north of Shahbagh. It was once the residence of the Dhaka Nawab family. It is now popular for the food street located on Old Elephant Road. Name There are two theories about the naming of Paribagh area. According to many, Paribagh area is named after Pari Bano, daughter of Khwaja Ahsanullah. Pari Bano was the half-sister of Khwaja Salimullah. It was the garden house of Nawabs of Dhaka. Before that the area belonged to Hindu landlords. Khwaja Salimullah bought the area from the Hindu landlords. The garden house came to be known as Paribagh as the abode of Pari Bano. New Market () is a commercial shopping market in north of Azimpur, Dhaka. It is situated on the opposite side of Chandni Chowk. History The market was set up 1954 as a shopping complex, to cater to the needs of the people from the residential areas of University of Dhaka, Azimpur and Dhanmondi. Shakil Ahmed (Major General)
Major General Shakil Ahmed was a two-star major-general of the Bangladesh Army and the head of Bangladesh Rifles (now Border Guard Bangladesh). He was commissioned in the Regiment of Artillery in 1976. He was a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College, Malaysia. A former Distinguished Allied Graduate from Field Artillery Officers Advanced Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma of the US Army, he had been a Directing Staff at Defence Services Command and Staff College in Mirpur, Dhaka. He was also an instructor at Artillery School and commanded a Field Artillery Brigade. Later he became a Sector Commander of Bangladesh Rifles. 2009 Bangladesh Rifles Revolt
The Bangladesh Rifles revolt (also referred to as the Pilkhana tragedy) was a mutiny staged on 25 and 26 February 2009 in Dhaka by a section of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), a paramilitary force mainly tasked with guarding the borders of Bangladesh. The rebelling BDR soldiers took over the BDR headquarters in Pilkhana, killing BDR director-general Shakil Ahmed along with 56 other army officers and 17 civilians. They also fired on civilians, held many of their officers and their families hostage, vandalised property and looted valuables . By the second day, unrest had spread to 12 other towns and cities. The mutiny ended as the mutineers surrendered their arms and released the hostages after a series of discussions and negotiations with the government. On 5 November 2013, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Court sentenced 152 people to death and 161 to life imprisonment; another 256 people received sentences between three and ten years for their involvement in the mutiny.
