Piffard is a census-designated place (CDP) and hamlet in the town of York, Livingston County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 220. The ZIP Code is 14533. History The name is from early settler David Piffard. Westerly, a historic home, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The Roman Catholic Abbey of the Genesee was founded a mile north of Piffard in 1951. Geography Piffard is in northwestern Livingston County, in the southeast part of the town of York. It is bordered to the west by the Hamlet of Retsof. New York State Route 63 passes through the Piffard, leading southeast to Geneseo, the Livingston county seat, and northwest to Batavia. Westerly (Piffard, New York)
Westerly is a historic home located at the hamlet of Piffard in Livingston County, New York. It was built in 1850 by a local builder named McBride. The two story brick house set on a stone foundation with a hipped roof and widow's walk, is thought to have followed plans in a builders handbook of the period and features subdued Greek Revival characteristics with a hint of Italian Villa design elements. The house was built by prominent early settlers Major and Mrs. William H. Spencer, whose son William Spencer married Julia Tyler, daughter of President John Tyler and Julia Gardiner Tyler in 1869. Henry Granger Piffard (10 September 1842 in Piffard, New York – 8 June 1910 New York City) was author of the first systematic treatise on dermatology in America. He is heralded as one of the founders of dermatology in the U.S., having founded the ''Journal of Cutaneous and Venereal Diseases,'' which later became ''JAMA Dermatology.'' Geneseo is a village in and the county seat of Livingston County in the Finger Lakes region of New York, United States, south of Rochester. The name "Geneseo" is an anglicization of the Iroquois name for the earlier Iroquois town there, ''Gen-nis-he-yo'', which means "beautiful valley". New York State Route 63
New York State Route 63 (NY 63) is a state highway in the western part of New York in the United States. It extends for in a generally southeast–northwest direction from an intersection with NY 15 and NY 21 in the village of Wayland in Steuben County to a junction with NY 18 in the town of Yates in Orleans County, south of the Lake Ontario shoreline. The route passes through the city of Batavia and enters or comes near several villages, including Dansville and Medina. Retsof, New York
Retsof is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) within the town of York in Livingston County, New York, United States. The community, situated southwest of the city of Rochester, is off New York State Route 63 approximately one mile east of State Route 36. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 340. It was founded by a man named William Foster, Jr., who reversed the letters of his name to name the town, and it was the site of one of the world's largest salt mines until its collapse in 1994. A new mine, the Hampton Corners mine, is located near Mount Morris, about to the southeast. The original population of Retsof was mostly of Italian origin; they lived in a company town where the salt mine owned the houses and a store and maintained the small village.
