Pietro Marussig
Pietro Marussig (16 May 1879 – 13 October 1937) was an Italian painter. Biography He was born in Trieste, and initially took lessons there from Eugenio Scomparini. He worked in Trieste from 1898 until 1918, and in Milan from 1919 until 1937. He painted in a representative expressionist style, depicting genre scenes, vedute, and portraits. He was part of a group of Milanese artists known as the Novecento Italiano who exhibited at the Permanente of Milan in 1926 and 1929, and included Anselmo Bucci, Leonardo Dudreville, Achille Funi, Gian Emilio Malerba, Ubaldo Oppi, and Mario Sironi. Mario Sironi
Mario Sironi (May 12, 1885 – August 13, 1961) was an Italian modernist artist who was active as a painter, sculptor, illustrator, and designer. His typically somber paintings are characterized by massive, immobile forms. Biography He was born in Sassari on the island of Sardinia. He embarked on the study of engineering at the University of Rome but quit after a nervous breakdown in 1903, one of many severe depressions that would recur throughout his life. Mussolini
Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini (; 29 July 188328 April 1945) was an Italian politician and journalist who founded and led the National Fascist Party. He was Prime Minister of Italy from the March on Rome in 1922 until his deposition in 1943, and "Duce" of Italian Fascism from the establishment of the Italian Fasces of Combat in 1919 until his execution in 1945 by Italian partisans. As dictator of Italy and principal founder of fascism, Mussolini inspired and supported the international spread of fascist movements during the inter-war period. Mussolini was originally a socialist politician and a journalist at the ''Avanti!'' newspaper. Margherita Sarfatti (née Grassini; 8 April 1880 – 30 October 1961) was an Italian journalist, art critic, patron, collector, socialite, and prominent propaganda adviser of the National Fascist Party. She was Benito Mussolini's biographer as well as one of his mistresses. Biography Sarfatti was born in Venice, the daughter of Amedeo Grassini and Emma Levi (whose cousin Giuseppe Levi was the father of Natalia Ginzburg). Amedeo was a wealthy Jewish lawyer and businessman. He was a fiscal attorney for the Venetian government and a close friend of Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto, later Pope Pius X. He would later be made a Knight of the Order of the Crown of Italy. Sarfatti grew up in a ''palazzo'' situated at the Canal Grande in Venice and was educated by private tutors. Ubaldo Oppi
Ubaldo Oppi (25 July 1889 – 1942) was an Italian painter, one of the founders of the Novecento Italiano in Milan. He painted in a neo-quattrocento realist style. Biography He was born in Bologna, but by the age of 4 years, his father, a shoe salesman, had moved to Vicenza. He was sent by his father North to the German countries to learn the shoe trade, but elected to stay in Vienna (1907–1909), and study under Gustav Klimt. He returned to Italy, and was drafted into the military for a year, serving in the Adriatic coasts. He would then travel to Paris, where he frequented the modern artistic circles. There he had a brief affair with Fernande Olivier, who had been the mistress of Pablo Picasso, an acquaintance of Ubaldo.
