Piethorne Brook
Piethorne Brook is a watercourse in Greater Manchester. It is a tributary of the River Beal. Sources Piethorne Brook and its feeder streams originate on the area of high moorland at Windy Hill on the south side of the M62 motorway close to its summit near the old boundary between Lancashire and Yorkshire. The source of the brook, and its immediate feeder stream, is beside Rock Stones Hill, at 415 metres above sea level (1360 ft.), to the south west of the telecommunications mast beside the A672 Oldham-Ripponden road. The brook has ten other feeder streams including two from Axletree Edge beyond Bleakedgate Moor, which rises to 425 metres (1400 ft), two from Millstone Moss between Green Hole Hill and Readycon Hill, rising at 445 metres (1450 ft.) and flowing down Great Whinning Gulf and Little Whinning Gulf, via Culvert Clough, into Cold Greave Brook. Edwin Butterworth
Edwin Butterworth (1 October 1812 – 19 April 1848) was an English journalist, topographer, antiquarian and writer on local history known particularly as a researcher for Edward Baines's History of Lancashire. Life and career Butterworth was the tenth and youngest child of the topographer James Butterworth, and was born at Pitses, near Oldham, in 1812. He followed in the footsteps of his father, whom he assisted in his later works, but was more given to statistical research. When Edward Baines undertook the preparation of a history of Lancashire, he found a useful colleague in Edwin Butterworth, who visited many parts of the county in order to collect the requisite particulars. Piethorne Reservoir
Piethorne Reservoir is the largest of several List of reservoirs and dams in the United Kingdom, reservoirs in the Piethorne Valley above Newhey, by Milnrow, in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England. It was built between 1858 and 1868. During excavations at Piethorne in the mid-19th century, a Celtic spear-head with a blade was unearthed, implying human habitation in the locality during the Bronze Age. Windy Hill in the South Pennines within the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale in Greater Manchester, England, rises to metres above sea level. The hill is located west of the A672 road and south west of Junction 22 on the M62 motorway. Windy Hill cutting is up to deep and the longest on the M62. A pedestrian footbridge, long and above the carriageways, carries the Pennine Way above Windy Hill cutting. Its parabolic arch and splayed legs are designed to withstand wind speeds up to 120 mph. M62 Motorway
The M62 is a west–east trans-Pennine motorway in Northern England, connecting Liverpool and Hull via Manchester, Bradford, Leeds and Wakefield; of the route is shared with the M60 orbital motorway around Manchester. The road is part of the unsigned Euroroutes E20 ( Shannon to Saint Petersburg) and E22 (Holyhead to Ishim).
