Pierre Guffroy
Pierre Guffroy (22 April 1926 – 27 September 2010) was a French production designer and art director. The production design gives the viewers a sense of the time period, the plot location, and character actions and feelings. ''Tess'' is a 1979 drama film directed by Roman Polanski and starring Nastassja Kinski, Peter Firth, and Leigh Lawson. It is an adaptation of Thomas Hardy's 1891 novel '' Tess of the d'Urbervilles''. The screenplay was written by Gérard Brach, John Brownjohn, and Roman Polanski. The Academy Award for Best Production Design recognizes achievement for art direction in film. The category's original name was Best Art Direction, but was changed to its current name in 2012 for the 85th Academy Awards. This change resulted from the Art Directors' branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) being renamed the Designers' branch.
