Pierre Gillou
Pierre Gillou (17 September 1880 – 3 January 1953) was a French tennis player, captain and administrator. Gillou was the manager and non-playing captain of the French Davis Cup team, consisting of Jean Borotra, Jacques Brugnon, Henri Cochet and René Lacoste, collectively known as the Four Musketeers, who won the Davis Cup in 1927 and successfully defended it from 1928 until 1932. As a promotor and investor Gillou played an important role in the creation of the Stade Roland Garros which opened in 1928. He became president of the national French tennis association, Fédération Française de Tennis (FFT) in 1930 after the death of Albert Canet and was also president of the omnisport club Racing Club de France in Paris. At the time of his death in 1953 he was the vice-president of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). From 1953 until 1978 the trophy awarded to the winner of the men's singles at the French Open was called the "coupe Pierre-Gillou" in his honour. His annu ... Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. The sport can be played by anyone who can hold a racket, including wheelchair users. The modern game of tennis originated in Birmingham, England, in the late 19th century as lawn tennis. The French Tennis Federation (french: Fédération française de tennis, FFT) is the governing body for tennis in France. It was founded in 1920, and is tasked with the organisation, co-ordination and promotion of the sport. It is recognised by the International Tennis Federation and by the French Minister for Sports. Antoine Gentien
Antoine Gentien (13 June 1905 – 2 September 1968) was a French tennis player whose career lasted from 1921 to 1951. He was the son of Antoinette Gillou and the nephew of Kate Gillou. Katie was four times French (closed) singles champion. Antoine was friends with Suzanne Lenglen. He won several tournaments in France, but at the French Championships his best result was reaching the quarterfinals in 1927. He made his Wimbledon debut in 1923 and lost in round one. Gentien made his debut at the French Championships in 1925 and lost in round two. He lost in round one at the French in 1926. In 1927 Gentien had one of the best wins of his career when he beat Jean Borotra at the French Championships, making the Bounding Basque run all over the court and lobbing Borotra if he came to the net. Catherine Marie Blanche "Katie" Gillou (17 February 1887 – 1 January 1964) was a French tennis player in the first decade of the 20th century.
