Picturesque America
''Picturesque America'' was a two-volume set of books describing and illustrating the scenery of America, which grew out of an earlier series in '' Appleton's Journal''. It was published by D. Appleton and Company of New York in 1872 and 1874 and edited by the romantic poet and journalist William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878), who also edited the New York Evening Post. The layout and concept was similar to that of '' Picturesque Europe''. Picturesque is an aesthetic ideal introduced into English cultural debate in 1782 by William Gilpin (clergyman), William Gilpin in ''Observations on the River Wye, and Several Parts of South Wales, etc. Relative Chiefly to Picturesque Beauty; made in the Summer of the Year 1770'', a practical book which instructed England's leisured travellers to examine "the face of a country by the rules of picturesque beauty". Picturesque, along with the aesthetic and cultural strands of Gothic fiction, Gothic and Celtic Revival, Celticism, was a part of the emerging Romanticism, Romantic sensibility of the 18th century. The term "picturesque" needs to be understood in relationship to two other aesthetic ideals: the ''beauty, beautiful'' and the ''sublime (philosophy), sublime''. Albert Fitch Bellows
Albert Fitch Bellows (November 20, 1829November 24, 1883), was an American landscape painter of the Hudson River School. Early years Bellows was born at Milford, Massachusetts. He first studied architecture and, in 1849, became the partner of Boston architect John D. Towle as Towle & Bellows. However, Bellows quickly turned to painting. From 1850 to 1856 he taught at the New England School of Design in Boston. He resigned his post to travel and study abroad, and spent time in Paris and at the Royal Academy at Antwerp as well as in England. He exhibited his first work at the National Academy of Design in 1857, becoming a full member in 1861. Return to New York Bellows settled in New York City in 1858 on his return to America. He spent most of his remaining career in New York, though he briefly moved to Boston. Robert Hinshelwood
Robert Douglas Hinshelwood (born 1938) is an English psychiatrist and academic. He is a Professor Emeritus of Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Essex. He trained as a doctor and psychiatrist. He has taken an interest in the Therapeutic Community movement since 1974, and was founding editor of ''The International Journal of Therapeutic Communities'' (in 1980), having edited, with Nick Manning, ''Therapeutic Communities: Reflections and Progress'' (1979, London: Routledge). Thomas Cole was an English-born American artist and the founder of the Hudson River School art movement. Cole is widely regarded as the first significant American landscape painter. William Hamilton Gibson (October 5, 1850July 16, 1896) was an American illustrator, author and naturalist. Jules Tavernier (painter)
Jules Tavernier (27 April 1844 – 18 May 1889) was a French painter, illustrator, and an important member of Hawaii’s Volcano School. Life and career He was born on 27 April 1844 in Paris. He studied with the French painter, Félix Joseph Barrias (1822–1907), but left France in the 1870s, never to return. Tavernier was employed as an illustrator by '' Harper's Magazine'', which sent him, along with Paul Frenzeny, on a year-long coast-to-coast sketching tour in 1873. He arrived in San Francisco in the summer of 1874, but soon traveled south and founded an art colony on the Monterey Peninsula. Eventually, he continued westward to Hawaii, where he made a name for himself as a landscape painter. Robert Swain Gifford
Robert Swain Gifford (December 23, 1840 – January 15, 1905) was an American landscape painter. He was influenced by the Barbizon school. Early life and education Gifford was born on Nonamesset Island, in the Elizabeth Islands, When he was 2 he moved with his family to the New Bedford area, and he attended public schools in New Bedford. When Gifford was a teen, the Dutch painter Albertus Van Beest arrived in New Bedford, and the two collaborated on ship paintings. Career Gifford opened a studio in Boston in 1864. Two years later he moved to New York City. In 1867 he was named an Associate of the National Academy of Design and in 1878 he became a full member. William Hart (painter)
William Hart (March 31, 1823June 17, 1894), was a Scottish-born American landscape and cattle painter, and Hudson River School artist. His younger brother, James McDougal Hart, and his younger sister, Julie Hart Beers, were also Hudson River School artists, and his nieces Letitia Bonnet Hart and Mary Theresa Hart became well-known painters as well. Alfred Rudolph Waud ( ; October 2, 1828 – April 6, 1891) was an American artist and illustrator, born in London, England. He is most notable for the sketches he made as an artist correspondent during the American Civil War. Early life Waud was christened Alfred Robert Waud but used Rhudolph as a middle name while living in America. He was the eldest son of Alfred Waud Sr., born London 1796. Homer Dodge Martin (October 28, 1836 – February 12, 1897) was an American artist, particularly known for his landscape paintings. Examples of Martin's work are in many important American museums. Biography Martin was born in Albany, New York on October 28, 1836, the fourth and youngest son of Homer Martin and Sarah Dodge.
