Picrew
Picrew is a layered paper doll-style avatar maker website. It was initially developed by the two staff of the Japanese company TetraChroma Inc from July 2017, and officially released in December 2018. The website's concept and interface have some similarities to earlier avatar editing systems, including Nintendo's Mii avatars and WeeMee, and the longer history of digital paper doll games such as Kisekae Set System. Picrew has become popular with audiences outside of Japan, with the simplicity of the image maker and the potential for users to contribute their own Picrew avatar maker illustrations through a Picrew creator. Picrew sets some restrictions in its terms of use, including the prohibition of re-distribution of the images created through Picrew image makers. Individual creators control some of the rights to the resulting images from their image makers. In computing, an avatar is a graphical representation of a user or the user's character or persona. Avatars can be two-dimensional icons in Internet forums and other online communities, where they are also known as profile pictures, userpics, or formerly picons (personal icons). Alternatively, an avatar can take the form of a three-dimensional model, as used in online worlds and video games. The term ' () originates from Sanskrit, and was adopted by early computer games and science fiction novelists. Richard Garriott extended the term to an on-screen user representation in 1985, and the term gained wider adoption in Internet forums and MUDs. WeeMee
A WeeMee is an avatar that can be exported to Facebook, Twitter and e-mail. WeeMees appear primarily on WeeWorld.com where users create homepages that are similar to Facebook which showcases their friends, messages received, and rooms. WeeMees can be used to chat in a virtual world, play in games and participate in forums. Users customize their WeeMees with trendy clothing, accessories and interests to make their WeeMee unique. By June 2005 nearly 5 million users had created a personal WeeMee, In October 2006 Iain Bruce of the ''Sunday Herald'' reported a new WeeMee being created every 5 seconds, and by April 2008 more than 21 million had been created with more than 600,000 new ones created each month. Kisekae Set System
Kisekae Set System (commonly known as KiSS) is a blending of art with computers originally designed to allow creation of virtual "paper dolls". Kisekae is short for "kisekae ningyou"; a Japanese term meaning "dress-up dolls". Unlike "computer art" which creates or displays traditional art via a computer, KiSS uses the computer as the medium, allowing the art to be not only animated, but also interactive. Availability KiSS is an Open standard which has to some extent been implemented on many platforms, including several PDAs. It has also been implemented in Java and on the web. History KiSS originated in Japan in 1991 with "dolls" based on shōjo manga characters. PlayStation Home was a virtual 3D social networking, social gaming platform developed by Sony Computer Entertainment's London Studio for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) on the PlayStation Network (PSN).
