Piccolo Quintet
Piccolo Quintet is short for the Quintet op. 26 of Graham Waterhouse, composed in 1989 for piccolo and string quartet and published by Zimmermann in 2002 as Quintet for piccolo, 2 violins, viola and violoncello. History In 1989 the composer Graham Waterhouse was a cellist of the orchestra of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, conducted by Sergiu Celibidache. The piccolo player of the orchestra suggested a quintet composition, Celibidache influenced the work. The quintet in one movement of about 16 minutes is in sonata form, framed by a slow introduction which reappears toward the end. A virtuoso coda concludes the work. The sound of the piccolo is combined with the strings similar to wind instrument and strings in clarinet quintets. The Quintet was first performed on 1 January 1990 in a private concert in London. Graham Waterhouse
Graham Waterhouse (born 2 November 1962) is an English composer and cellist who specializes in chamber music. He has composed a cello concerto, ''Three Pieces for Solo Cello'' and ''Variations for Cello Solo'' for his own instrument, and string quartets and compositions that juxtapose a quartet with a solo instrument, including Piccolo Quintet, Bassoon Quintet and the piano quintet '' Rhapsodie Macabre''. He has set poetry for speaking voice and cello, such as ''Der Handschuh'', and has written song cycles. His compositions reflect the individual capacity and character of players and instruments, from the piccolo to the contrabassoon. Since 1998, Waterhouse has organised a concert series at the Gasteig in Munich, often playing with members of the Munich Philharmonic. His works have been performed internationally and several have been recorded. Erwin Schulhoff
Erwin Schulhoff ( cs, Ervín Šulhov; 8 June 189418 August 1942) was an Austro-Czech composer and pianist. He was one of the figures in the generation of European musicians whose successful careers were prematurely terminated by the rise of the Nazi Germany, Nazi regime in Germany and whose works have been rarely noted or performed. Life Schulhoff was born in Prague into a German-Ashkenazi Jews, Jewish family. His father Gustav Schulhoff was a wool merchant from Prague and his mother Louise Wolff from Frankfurt am Main, Germany, Frankfurt. The noted pianist and composer Julius Schulhoff was his great-uncle. Antonín Dvořák encouraged Schulhoff's earliest musical studies, which began at the Prague Conservatory when he was ten years old. Vivaldi
Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (4 March 1678 – 28 July 1741) was an Italian composer, virtuoso violinist and impresario of Baroque music. Regarded as one of the greatest Baroque composers, Vivaldi's influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe, giving origin to many imitators and admirers. He pioneered many developments in orchestration, violin technique and programatic music.
