Piano Quintet (Oswald)
The Piano Quintet in C major, Op. 18, by Henrique Oswald was finished in 1895. Like most of the piano quintets after the Schumann's, it is scored for piano, 2 violins, viola and cello. A typical performance takes 27–31 minutes. History The quintet was composed by Oswald during the last decade of his Italian period. He has already composed the Piano Quartet No. 1, Op. 5 (1888), the Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 9 (1889) and two string quartets, thus proving to be a confident composer of chamber music. However, none of these compositions were printed during his lifetime. The quintet is dedicated to ''Signora Karl Hillebrand'', that is, , widow of Karl Hillebrand, a friend of Hans von Bülow, Richard Wagner and Franz Liszt. A relevant person in Florence music life since 1850s, she was the teacher of Giuseppe Buonamici, who became a crucial figure in Oswald's musical formation. Piano Quintet
In classical music, a piano quintet is a work of chamber music written for piano and four other instruments, most commonly a string quartet (i.e., two violins, viola, and cello). The term also refers to the group of musicians that plays a piano quintet. The genre particularly flourished during the nineteenth century. Until the middle of the nineteenth century, most piano quintets were scored for piano, violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Following the success of Robert Schumann's Piano Quintet in E major, Op. 44 in 1842, which paired the piano with a string quartet, composers increasingly adopted Schumann's instrumentation, and it was this form of the piano quintet that dominated during the second half of the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. Betina is a village located on the Croatian island of Murter, seven km from Tisno, where a drawbridge connects the island and the mainland. The largest of the Šibenik archipelago islands, and the closest to the mainland, it has been populated since the time of the Illyrians (tribe of Liburns). Luís De Freitas Branco
Luís Maria da Costa de Freitas Branco (12 October 1890 – 27 November 1955) was a Portuguese composer, musicologist, and professor of music who played a pre-eminent part in the development of Portuguese music in the first half of the 20th century. Life Luís Maria da Costa de Freitas Branco was born in Lisbon into an aristocratic family who for centuries had had close ties to the royal family in Portugal. His brother, Pedro, was a conductor. Luís had a cosmopolitan education, studied piano and violin beginning in childhood and began composing at a precocious age. José Eduardo Gandra da Silva Martins, born 1938, is a Brazilian concert pianist. Career He began his career with a performance at the Colombo Theater in São Paulo on December 10, 1954, which included contemporary works by Dmitri Shostakovich. Martins was Professor at the university of São Paulo between 1982-2007. Cláudio Franco de Sá Santoro (23 November 1919 – 27 March 1989) was an internationally renowned Brazilian composer, conductor and violinist. Biography Early life A native of Manaus, the capital of Amazonas, Santoro started to study violin and piano as a child. His efforts made the Government of Amazonas send him to study at the Conservatório Brasileiro de Música in Rio de Janeiro. Career At the age of 18, he was already teaching violin at the conservatory. Oscar Lorenzo Fernández
Oscar Lorenzo Fernández (4 November 1897 – 27 August 1948) was a Brazilian composer of Spanish descent. He was born and died in Rio de Janeiro. Life Fernández studied at the Instituto Nacional de Música with Francisco Braga, Frederico Nascimento, and Henrique Oswald. In 1923, Nascimento was taken seriously ill, and Fernández was designated his temporary substitute in the chair of upper-level harmony, an appointment which became permanent two years later. In 1936 he founded the Conservatório Brasileiro de Música in Rio de Janeiro, which he directed until his death. From 1939 onward, he also served as Professor of Choral Singing at the Conservatório Nacional de Canto Orfeônico. Eduardo Henrique Soares Monteiro (born Rio de Janeiro, 1966) is a concert pianist, university professor and piano teacher. Musical education Graduating with a BA and an MA from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, he earned a Doctorate at the Sorbonne in 2000 on the subject of the chamber music of Brazilian composer Henrique Oswald. Initial piano teachers included Esther Naiberger and Myrian Dauelsberg, and he received many prizes in Brazil.
