Phom People
Phom is a Naga tribe from Nagaland, India. Their traditional territory lies between the territories of Konyak in the north-east, the Ao in the west and the Chang in the south. Yongnyah is the largest Phom village. Economy Agriculture is the traditional occupation of the Phoms, and the tribe practices jhum cultivation. The Phoms also have a tradition of pottery, bamboo work and spinning. Origin The origin of the Phoms, like that of other Naga tribes, is uncertain. One oral tradition of the Phoms, like that of the Ao Nagas, states that their ancestors originated from stones. They also believe that their ancestors migrated to Mt. Yungnyü (a mountainous Hill in Longleng district) and from their separated to different villages. Culture Phom's culture,tradition and language is closely related to the konyak nagas of Nagaland and the Wancho nagas in Arunachal Pradesh. Phom Language
Phom is a Sino-Tibetan language spoken by the Phom people of Nagaland, north-eastern India. Its speakers inhabit 36 villages in Longleng District (''Ethnologue''). Alternate names for Phom include Assiringia, Chingmengu, Phom, Phon, Tamlu, and Tamlu Naga (''Ethnologue''). Phonology All phonological charts are from Burling (1998). Konyak People
The Konyaks are one of the major Naga ethnic groups. In Nagaland, they inhabit the Mon District, which is also known as ''The Land of the Anghs''. The ''Anghs''/''Wangs'' are their traditional chiefs whom they hold in high esteem. Facial tattoos were earned for taking an enemy's head. Other unique traditional practices that set the Konyaks apart are: gunsmithing, iron-smelting, brass-works, and gunpowder-making. They are also known for in making excellent ''Yanglaü'' (machetes) and wooden sculptures. Society The Konyaks are the largest of the Naga ethnic groups. Ao Naga
The Ao Nagas are a major Naga ethnic group native to Mokokchung District of Nagaland, Northeast India. Their main territory is from Tsüla (Dikhu) Valley in the east to Tsürang (Disai) Valley in the west in Mokokchung District. The Ao Nagas refer to themselves as ''Aoer'', which means "those who came" from across the Dikhu river. They were the first Nagas to embrace Christianity and by virtue of this development the Aos availed themselves of the Western education that came along with Christianity. In the process the Aos pioneered among the Nagas in many fields. Christianity first entered into the Ao territory when an American Baptist missionary, Edwin W. Chang Naga
Chang is a Naga ethnic group of Nagaland, India. It is one of the recognized Scheduled Tribes. The tribe was also known as Mazung in British India. Other Naga ethnic groups know the Changs by different names including ''Changhai'' ( Khiamniungan), ''Changru'' (Yimkhiung), ''Duenching'' (upper Konyak), ''Machungrr'' ( Ao), ''Mochumi'' ( Sümi) and ''Mojung'' (Konyak). Origin According to oral tradition, the Changs emerged from a place called Changsangmongko, and later settled at Changsang. The word Chang is said to have been derived from the word (banyan tree), after a mythical banyan tree that grew at the now-abandoned Changsang. Jhum Cultivation
Slash-and-burn agriculture is a farming method that involves the cutting and burning of plants in a forest or woodland to create a Field (agriculture), field called a swidden. The method begins by cutting down the trees and woody plants in an area. The downed vegetation, or "slash", is then left to dry, usually right before the rainiest part of the year. Then, the Biomass (ecology), biomass is burned, resulting in a nutrient-rich layer of ash which makes the Soil fertility, soil fertile, as well as temporarily eliminating weed and pest species.
