Phillis Nolan
Phillis Nolan (10 February 1946 – 16 March 2022) was an Irish lawn bowler. Bowls career World Outdoor Championship Nolan partnered Margaret Johnston in a very successful pairs team and they won three consecutive World Outdoor Bowls Championships gold medals. The three world titles came at the 1988 World Outdoor Bowls Championship, 1992 World Outdoor Bowls Championship and the 1996 World Outdoor Bowls Championship. Atlantic Championships In 1993, she won the pairs gold medal with Barbara Cameron at the inaugural Atlantic Bowls Championships. She went on to win three more medals at the Championships. Bray, County Wicklow
Bray ( ) is a coastal town in north County Wicklow, Ireland. It is situated about south of Dublin city centre on the east coast. It has a population of 32,600 making it the ninth largest urban area within Ireland (at the 2016 census). Bowls, also known as lawn bowls or lawn bowling, is a sport in which the objective is to roll biased balls so that they stop close to a smaller ball called a "jack" or "kitty". Irish National Bowls Championships
The Irish National Bowls Championships combines Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Traditionally the game was played mainly in Northern Ireland but the Kenilworth Bowling Club of Dublin joined the Irish Bowls Association in 1906 which prompted the merger into one team. With the exception of the Commonwealth Games players continue to represent a combined Ireland team. The singles championship is called the Dr Rusk Cup named after Dr John Rusk, President of the IBA and the singles representative player at the Lawn Bowls at the 1934 British Empire Games. The Pairs is called the T.W McMullan Cup, the Triples is known as the Charlie Clawson Cup and the Fours is known as the C.L MacKean Cup. Roy Fulton is a record seven times singles champion closely followed by Martin McHugh with six wins. Barbara Cameron (bowls)
Barbara Mary Cameron (born 16 April 1962) is a Northern Irish international lawn bowler and bowls coach. Bowls career International In 1993, she won the pairs gold medal with Phillis Nolan at the inaugural Atlantic Bowls Championships. Two years later she won the pairs bronze medal at the Atlantic Championships. She competed for Northern Ireland in the women's pairs event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where she won a bronze medal. National In 2001, Cameron won the singles crown at the Irish National Bowls Championships, bowling for Ballymena BC. In 2022, she won the triples title. Coaching Cameron was selected as a coach for the Northern Ireland team for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Queensland. Margaret Johnston (bowls)
Margaret Johnson MBE (born 2 May 1943) is a former Northern Irish lawn and indoor bowler. Bowls career Johnston is arguably the greatest women's player of all time despite only starting outdoor bowling in 1979. From Bellaghy, County Londonderry, she joined an indoor club and played locally for many years before joining the Ballymoney Club. In her first year of the outdoors game Johnston reached the final of the Irish Singles. World Outdoor Her record in the World Outdoor Bowls Championship reads as six golds, two silver and one bronze. In 1988 she was pairs champion with Phillis Nolan, silver in the singles and bronze in the team. Four years later she won the singles and pairs (with Nolan again) and a silver in the team. In 1996 she won a third consecutive pairs title with Nolan and four years later in the 2000 World Outdoor Bowls Championship she became singles Champion again. British Isles Bowls Championships
The British Isles Bowls Championships is a tournament held between the champions of their respective nations, England Scotland, Wales, combined Ireland and more recently Guernsey and Jersey. It was first held in 1960 although the triples event did not start until 1977. The women's events started in June 1972, with the triples starting in 1982. The first women's singles winner was Lilian Nicholas of Wales. The first men's singles winner was Kenneth Coulson of England and the legendary David Bryant (bowls), David Bryant MBE holds the record for the most singles titles with four. The tournament is held the year after each of the National champions have been crowned. The 2020 edition was initially cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic but because there were no National Championships held during 2020 (also due to the pandemic) the 2020 edition was rescheduled for 2021. Atlantic Bowls Championships
The Atlantic Bowls Championships was a lawn bowling competition held between national bowls organisations in the Atlantic region. The event was a qualifying event for the World Outdoor Bowls Championships until the 2021 announcement that it would no longer be held. Originally the Championships were for women only and were called the Atlantic Rim Championships. In 2007 men competed for the first time at the event. The 2001 tournament due to be held in Namibia was cancelled due to opposition from the Namibia Sports Commission. The next tournament was held in 2005. In 2021, the 2020 World Outdoor Bowls Championship was officially cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. World Bowls then decided that the World Championships would take place every two years starting in 2023.
