Margaret Johnston (bowls)
Margaret Johnson MBE (born 2 May 1943) is a former Northern Irish lawn and indoor bowler. Bowls career Johnston is arguably the greatest women's player of all time despite only starting outdoor bowling in 1979. From Bellaghy, County Londonderry, she joined an indoor club and played locally for many years before joining the Ballymoney Club. In her first year of the outdoors game Johnston reached the final of the Irish Singles. World Outdoor Her record in the World Outdoor Bowls Championship reads as six golds, two silver and one bronze. In 1988 she was pairs champion with Phillis Nolan, silver in the singles and bronze in the team. Four years later she won the singles and pairs (with Nolan again) and a silver in the team. In 1996 she won a third consecutive pairs title with Nolan and four years later in the 2000 World Outdoor Bowls Championship she became singles Champion again. The following is a list of Irish counties' coats of arms. 1988 World Indoor Bowls Championship
The 1988 Embassy World Indoor Bowls Championship was held at Alexandra Palace, London, England, from 5 to 13 March 1988. The event moved to the newly rebuilt Alexandra Palace from the Coatbridge indoor bowling club. Seeds were introduced for the first time. Hugh Duff won the title beating Wynne Richards in the final five games to one (7-0, 7-1, 2-7, 7-6, 7-4, 7-4). The 1988 Midland Bank World Indoor Pairs Championship was held at the Bournemouth International Centre from 5 to 13 December 1987+.(+ Held in Dec 1987 to avoid a clash with the 1988 World Outdoor Championships). Ian Schuback & Jim Yates won the title defeating Andy Thomson & Gary Smith 5-1 in the final (6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 8-2, 7-5, 7-5). The World Singles Champion of Champions is an event inaugurated in 2003 that is contested annually between bowlers who have won their respective national singles title. The event was first held in 2003 at the Moama Bowling Club in Moama, Australia. Traditionally the competition favours the Southern Hemisphere players due to the fact that the Northern Hemisphere players have to travel to the event and compete on faster greens. Irish National Bowls Championships
The Irish National Bowls Championships combines Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Traditionally the game was played mainly in Northern Ireland but the Kenilworth Bowling Club of Dublin joined the Irish Bowls Association in 1906 which prompted the merger into one team. With the exception of the Commonwealth Games players continue to represent a combined Ireland team. The singles championship is called the Dr Rusk Cup named after Dr John Rusk, President of the IBA and the singles representative player at the Lawn Bowls at the 1934 British Empire Games. The Pairs is called the T.W McMullan Cup, the Triples is known as the Charlie Clawson Cup and the Fours is known as the C.L MacKean Cup. Phillis Nolan (10 February 1946 – 16 March 2022) was an Irish lawn bowler. Bowls career World Outdoor Championship Nolan partnered Margaret Johnston in a very successful pairs team and they won three consecutive World Outdoor Bowls Championships gold medals. The three world titles came at the 1988 World Outdoor Bowls Championship, 1992 World Outdoor Bowls Championship and the 1996 World Outdoor Bowls Championship.
