Philippe Boesmans
Philippe Boesmans (17 May 1936 – 10 April 2022) was a Belgian pianist, composer and academic teacher. He studied to be a pianist at the Royal Conservatory of Liège, and was self-taught as a composer, influenced by the Liège Group of Henri Pousseur, André Souris, and Célestin Deliège, and by attending the Darmstädter Ferienkurse. He worked for the Radio Télévision Belge de la Communauté Française (RTBF) from 1961, as a producer from 1971. Boesman became primarily recognised for his operas, with works written for the Royal Opera House La Monnaie in Brussels as composer in residence since 1985. Four operas were written in collaboration with Luc Bondy who adapted plays for him, Schnitzler's ''La Ronde'', Shakespeare's ''The Winter's Tale'', Strindberg's ''Miss Julie'' and ''Iwona, księżniczka Burgunda'' by Witold Gombrowicz, and who directed the world premieres of the operas. Tongeren
Tongeren (; french: Tongres ; german: Tongern ; li, Tóngere ) is a city and municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg, in the southeastern corner of the Flemish region of Belgium. Tongeren is the oldest town in Belgium, as the only Roman administrative capital within the country's borders. Serialism
In music, serialism is a method of Musical composition, composition using series of pitches, rhythms, dynamics, timbres or other elements of music, musical elements. Serialism began primarily with Arnold Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique, though some of his contemporaries were also working to establish serialism as a form of atonality, post-tonal thinking. Twelve-tone technique orders the twelve notes of the chromatic scale, forming a tone row, row or series and providing a unifying basis for a composition's melody, harmony, structural progressions, and variation (music), variations. ' is an opera by Philippe Boesmans to a libretto by Luc Bondy and after Shakespeare's ''The Winter's Tale''. It was premiered on 10 December 1999 at La Monnaie in Brussels. The German premiere followed in 2001 at the Staatstheater Braunschweig. History Philippe Boesmans has been composer-in-residence at Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, where he successfully showed '' Reigen'' in 1993, a literary opera after the play '' Reigen'' by Arthur Schnitzler, on a libretto by Luc Bondy. Now assisted by the writer , Boesmans and Bondy created ''Wintermärchen'' after Shakespeare's play ''The Winter's Tale''. The opera is dedicated to Bernard, Annick Foccroulle, and Harry Halbreich. The premiere on 10 December 1999 at La Monnaie was staged by Bondy on a set by Erich Wonder, conducted by Antonio Pappano and choreographed by Lucinda Childs. Pierre Mertens
Pierre Mertens (born 9 October 1939) is a Belgian French-speaking writer and lawyer who specializes in international law, director of the Centre de sociologie de la littérature at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, and literary critic with the newspaper ''Le Soir''. Influenced by Franz Kafka, Mertens started to publish novels and short stories in 1969 and received the Prix Médicis in 1987 for ''Les éblouissements''. He nevertheless continued his activities as a lawyer, participating in many battles for human rights. Consonance And Dissonance
In music, consonance and dissonance are categorizations of simultaneous or successive Sound, sounds. Within the Western tradition, some listeners associate consonance with sweetness, pleasantness, and acceptability, and dissonance with harshness, unpleasantness, or unacceptability, although there is broad acknowledgement that this depends also on familiarity and musical expertise. The Prix Italia is an international Television, Radio-broadcasting and Web award.
