Phil Sports Federation Of The Deaf
The Phil Sports Federation of the Deaf is the governing body for disability sports for deaf people in the Philippines. The organization was established in 2007 as a result of the 4th National Congress of the Deaf and 6th General Assembly of Philippine Federation of the Deaf which was held in San Mateo, Rizal. Deaf People
Deaf people are typically defined as those who have profound hearing impairment in both ears as a result of either acquired or congenital hearing loss. Such people may be associated with deaf culture. Deafness (little to no hearing) is distinguished from partial hearing loss or damage (such as tinnitus), which is less severe impairment in one or both sides. The definition of deafness varies across countries, cultures, and time, though the World Health Organization classes profound hearing loss as the failure to hear a sound of 90 decibels or louder in a hearing test. In addition to those with profound hearing loss, people without profound hearing loss may also identify as deaf, often where the person was raised within a deaf community and for whom sign language is their first language. Comité International Des Sports Des Sourds
Comité International des Sports des Sourds (CISS) is the apex body organizing international sports events for the deaf, particularly the Deaflympics (previously called World Games for the Deaf). It is also called the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf. The organization was founded in Paris by Eugène Rubens-Alcais, who organized the first "International Silent Games" in 1924. Alcais was himself deaf and was the president of the French Deaf Sports Federation. CISS, now also called ICSD, is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland. History The early pioneers of the international deaf sports movement were Eugène Rubens-Alcais (France) and Antoine Dresse (Belgium). The Philippine Federation of the Deaf, Inc. (PFD) is a non-stock, non-profit organization which caters to the general needs of deaf people in the Philippines. PFD is a national member of the World Federation of the Deaf. History The PFD was founded on October 19, 1996, in a meeting held at the Philippine School for the Deaf where 17 leaders of different Deaf organizations nationwide participated. It was formally established during its 1st General Assembly held at the Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City on May 19, 1997.
