Phil Manassa (born 29 January 1956) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Collingwood Magpies The Collingwood Football Club, nicknamed the Magpies or colloquially the Pies, is a professional Australian rules football club based in Melbourne that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), the sport's elite competition. The club w ... in the VFL. He is famous for a goal on the run from the half back flank, which he kicked in the 1977 Grand Final replay. The Phil Manassa Medal is awarded to the winner of the AFL Goal of the Year. After retiring from playing in the VFL, Manassa played for Devonport in Tasmania and Western Suburbs in Sydney. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. 1977 VFL Grand Final
The 1977 VFL Grand Final was a series of two Australian rules football matches between the North Melbourne Football Club and the Collingwood Football Club. Together they are considered the 80th and 81st grand finals of the Victorian Football League and were staged to determine the premiers for the 1977 VFL season. The premiership is usually decided by a single match; however, as the first grand final ended in a draw, a grand final replay was played the following week and was won by North Melbourne. Both grand finals were held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The first was held on 24 September 1977. The game was attended by 108,224 spectators and ended in a draw, with both teams scoring 76 points. This was the second time a draw had occurred in a VFL grand final, the first being in 1948. The Goal of the Year is a competition for the best Goal (sport), goal kick (football), kicked in the Australian Football League (AFL) during that season. It is run in conjunction with the Mark of the Year competition and is currently sponsored by Rebel Sport. The winner is awarded the Phil Manassa Medal. The concept of awards for the goal and mark of the year is thought to have been initiated in 1970, as an unofficial award given by the media to Alex Jesaulenko following his famous mark (Australian football), mark in that season's grand final. Inner West Magpies (formerly Western Suburbs AFC) is an Australian rules football club competing in the AFL Sydney league. The club is based in the inner west of Sydney, New South Wales, and its senior teams play their home games at their home ground of Picken Oval; having previously played out of Henson Park in 2009 and 2010.
