Phegopteris Hexagonoptera
''Phegopteris hexagonoptera'', commonly called the broad beech fern, is a common forest fern in the eastern United States and adjacent Ontario. It grows from a creeping rootstock, sending up individual fronds that more or less clump. Its native habitat includes moist, undisturbed, hardwood forests. The fronds are broadly triangular. The specific name ''hexagonoptera'' refers to the winging of leaf tissue along the rachis between the basal pinnae. Sori are small, round and naked. This aspect of the plant has caused it in the past to be placed, at first, in the genus ''Polypodium'', then grouped with genus ''Dryopteris'', then with the genus ''Thelypteris''. Genetic analysis has shown the genus ''Phegopteris'' to be a sister clade to the rest of the thelypteroid ferns. ''Phegopteris'' is a genus of ferns in the family Thelypteridaceae, subfamily Phegopteridoideae, in the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group classification of 2016 (PPG I). They are known collectively as the beech ferns. Species are native to Asia, North America and Europe. Taxonomy ''Phegopteris'' was first described in 1852 by Carl Borivoj Presl as an unranked taxon within the genus '' Polypodium''. It was raised to the rank of genus by Antoine Fée in the same year. Antoine Laurent Apollinaire Fée
Antoine Laurent Apollinaire Fée was a French botanist who was born in Ardentes, 7 November 1789, and died in Paris on 21 May 1874. He was the author of works on botany and mycology, practical and historical pharmacology, Darwinism, and his experiences in several regions of Europe. Biography After serving as a medical orderly during Napoleon's campaign in Spain, Fée established a pharmacy in Paris. He was schooled in the profession in Strasbourg, receiving his degree in 1815. He met the botanist Christiaan Hendrik Persoon in 1823, and came to be strongly influenced by him. Fée later became an instructor at teaching hospitals, firstly in Lille in 1825, then at Strasbourg in 1832. There he was promoted to M.D. and professor of botany. He also managed the botanical garden until Strasbourg was taken by the Prussians at the end of their war with France. Fée left and moved to Paris. Carl Frederik Albert Christensen (16 January 1872 – 24 November 1942) was a Danish systematic botanist. He graduated in natural history from the University of Copenhagen under professor Eugenius Warming. He was then a school teacher in Copenhagen, and later superintendent at the Botanical Museum. He was a specialist in ferns and published a catalogue of the World's Pteridophytes, ''Index Filicum''. In addition, he authored a three-volume work on the history of botany in Denmark. Charles Alfred Weatherby
Charles Alfred Weatherby (1875–1949) was an American botanist. Weatherby was born in Hartford, Connecticut, to Charles Nathaniel Weatherby and his wife, the former Grace Weld. Not long after Charles Alfred's birth, the family moved to Colorado. However, when he reached school age his parents sent him back to Connecticut. Weatherby studied literature at Harvard University, graduating summa cum laude in 1897. From 1899 to 1905 Weatherby was ill and lived with his mother in East Hartford. It was during this time he began his interest in botany and joined the Connecticut Botanical Society. In 1910 Weatherby went to Europe, where he met Una Leonora Foster, an artist with an interest in botany. They married in 1917. A fern (Polypodiopsida or Polypodiophyta ) is a member of a group of vascular plants (plants with xylem and phloem) that reproduce via spores and have neither seeds nor flowers. ''Thelypteris'' (maiden ferns) is a genus of ferns in the subfamily Thelypteridoideae, family Thelypteridaceae, order Polypodiales. Two radically different circumscriptions of the genus are in use .
