Petermann Island
Petermann Island is a small, low and rounded island, lying off the northwest coast of Kyiv Peninsula in Graham Land, Antarctica, a short distance south of Booth Island and the Lemaire Channel. It is a popular tourist destination. Description The island is long and across. It rises steeply to elevations of up to from a rocky coastline with raised pebble beaches. It has volcanic origins, with about half the land surface covered by a permanent, crevassed icecap. Ice-free areas have a sparse vegetation of mosses and lichens. The bedrock of the island is granodiorite, History The island was discovered by a German expedition of 1873–74, who named it after geographer August Petermann. Daniel Petermann (born October 4, 1995) is a professional Canadian football wide receiver for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League (CFL). University career Petermann played U Sports football for the McMaster Marauders from 2014 to 2017. Peter Travis Mann (born 7 September 1970) is a former Australian rules footballer. who played a total of 118 matches in the AFL for the North Melbourne and Fremantle Football Clubs. Peter is currently residing in Perth. Claremont and North Melbourne After playing 22 senior games in his debut season for Claremont, including their win in the WAFL Grand Final, Mann was drafted by the West Coast Eagles as a pre-draft priority selection in the 1989 VFL Draft. Viktor Petermann (26 May 1916 – 19 May 2001) was a German Luftwaffe ace and recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross during World War II. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Viktor Petermann was captured by American troops in May 1945, he was handed over to Soviet troops and was released in August 1945 due to his health problems. At the end of the war he flew the Me 262 fighter jet. During his career was credited with 64 aerial victories, four of them, after he lost his arm in an airfight, all on the Eastern Front. Erna Petermann (born 1912, date of death unknown) was a high-ranking female overseer at two Nazi concentration camps during the closing months of World War II. Biography Little is known about Erna Petermann, other than that she trained at the men's camp at Mittelbau-Dora sometime in 1944. The ''Schutzstaffel'' (SS) promoted Petermann to the rank of ''Lagerführerin'' (Female Camp Commandant) under a male commandant. Later, Petermann was transferred as Female Camp Commandant to the Großwerther subcamp in the Harz Mountains. Disappearance When Großwerther was liberated by the Allies, Petermann fled the camp and went into hiding. Her whereabouts were not discovered and therefore it was not possible to question her regarding possible involvement with war crimes. Her subsequent history and post-war activities remain unknown.
