Peter White (actor)
Peter White (born October 10, 1937) is an American actor. White was born in New York City, New York and studied acting at the prestigious Yale School of Drama. In 1968, White received critical acclaim for his role as Alan McCarthy in off-Broadway's '' The Boys in the Band''. White, and the rest of the original cast, appeared in the 1970 film version, directed by William Friedkin. He played Director of Central Intelligence John A. McCone in the film '' Thirteen Days''. Peter White is a professor of Classical Languages and Literatures at the University of Chicago. He has made some contributions to scholarship on Latin literature, even Roman poetics. He has written ''Promised Verse: Poets in the Society of Augustan Rome'' (Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1993), for which he won the American Philological Association's Goodwin Award in 1995. He has won some other honors, including the University of Chicago's highly prized Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. Peter White MBE (born 1947, Winchester) is a visually impaired British broadcast journalist and DJ. Broadcasting career Blind since birth (as was his elder brother), he attended New College Worcester, which was then known as the Worcester College for the Blind. He was a regular presenter on BBC Radio Solent from the station's launch in 1971 until November 2006, when he was downsized. He currently presents (with others) ''You and Yours'' and (since 1974) '' In Touch'' (both BBC Radio 4), a programme for blind and partially sighted people, and regularly contributes to other science, news or educational programmes to talk about disabilities. He was the presenter of Channel 4's ''Same Difference'' (1987–1989) and Central Television's ''Link'' (1989–1991). He was made the BBC's Disability Affairs Correspondent in 1995. Peter White (born 20 September 1954) is an English musician and composer who plays guitar, piano, accordion and harmonica. He is known for his 20-year collaboration with Al Stewart. Musical career Early career with Al Stewart Born in Luton, England, White first gained fame with his distinctive guitar style as accompanist to singer/songwriter Al Stewart. He started in Stewart's band in 1975 at the age of 20, then moved to Los Angeles in 1978. During a 20-year tenure with Stewart, he co-wrote many songs, including Stewart's 1978 top-ten hit " Time Passages" and “Midnight Rocks” (which reached #24 on the US charts) in 1980. That same year he formed Shot In The Dark, a band which backed Stewart and released an eponymous album in 1981. Peter White (October 31, 1830 – June 6, 1908) was one of the original settlers of Marquette, Michigan. He was a banker, businessman, real estate developer, and a philanthropist; and was involved in a number of the area's iron mining-related businesses, including acting as a director the Cleveland Iron Company. White served in many local and state public offices, including postmaster, county clerk, school board member, state representative and senator, and as a member of the state library commission and a Regent of the University of Michigan. Peter White, (August 30, 1838 – May 3, 1906) was a Canadian parliamentarian. White was born into a family that had established its homestead at the junction of the Muskrat and Ottawa Rivers where the town of Pembroke, Ontario was soon established. His family established several businesses including a lumberyard, general store and blacksmith's shop. As a young man, White and his brother took over the family business and became wealthy as they supplied the steam engine industries. He also became a major shareholder and president of the Pembroke Company. White entered politics and became reeve of Pembroke Township in 1870. He first ran for the House of Commons of Canada as a Conservative candidate in the 1872 federal election in the riding of Renfrew North but was defeated. Peter Nicholson Duckett White, MC (19 January 1936 – 13 February 2005) was an Australian Army officer and politician. Born in Brisbane, he was educated at the Royal Military College, Duntroon and the Australian National University in Canberra. He served in the Australian Army from 1954 to 1975, during which time he deployed to Malaya and Vietnam, was awarded the Military Cross, and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1977, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland as the Liberal member for Southport. He held that position until 1980, when he was defeated by National Party candidate, Doug Jennings.
