Peter Stewart (athlete)
Peter John Stewart (born 8 August 1947) is a British male former middle-distance runner. His greatest achievement was a gold medal in the 3000 metres at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 1971. He also competed in the 1500 metres at the 1971 European Athletics Championships that year, but failed to make the final. He also competed for Scotland at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games, narrowly missing out on a medal in fourth place. Nationally, he won the 1500 m at the 1972 AAA Championships and the 3000 m at the 1971 AAA Indoor Championships. He was also Scottish champion in the 1500 m in 1970. Both he and his brother, Ian Stewart, were members of Birchfield Harriers. At the Emsley Carr Mile, he took back-to-back titles in 1971 and 1972, following on from his brother's victory the previous year. GBR Athletics ... Emsley Carr Mile
The Emsley Carr Mile is an annual invitational athletics running event held in the United Kingdom over one mile for men. The race was won in 2022 by the British athlete Matthew Stonier. History The race was inaugurated in 1953 by Sir William Carr in memory of his father Sir Emsley Carr, a former editor of the ''News of the World''. The event was created to encourage athletes to break the four-minute mile. By the second time the race was run, Roger Bannister had already broken the world record on 6 May 1954 at the annual athletics event between the Amateur Athletics Association (AAA) and Oxford University at the Iffley Road Track in Oxford. Birchfield Harriers
Birchfield Harriers is an athletics club, founded in 1877. Its home is at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium, England. As well as welcoming recreational runners they cater for all levels of experience up to and including Olympic athletes whether able-bodied or wheelchair-using athletes. The Club's motto is ''Fleet and Free''. History The Harriers were named after the Birchfield district of Birmingham. Their previous home (from 1929-77), at nearby Perry Barr, was Alexander Sports Ground.
