Peter Cramer
Peter Cramer (24 August 1726 in Copenhagen – 17 July 1782 in Copenhagen) was a Danish painter who specialized in theatrical scenery and decorative work. Biography He was apparently self-taught. In the 1740s, he did some drawings for early versions of the ''Voyage d'Egypte et de Nubie'' by Frederic Louis Norden on behalf of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. On that basis, in 1754, he was recommended to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts for a travel scholarship that would enable him to become "an accomplished history painter". The Academy insisted on following procedure, however, and he was required to compete for a gold medal in 1756. He failed to come in first and his travel plans were not realized. Vigilius Eriksen
Vigilius Eriksen (2 September 1722 in Copenhagen – 25 May 1782 in Rungstedgård) was a Danish painter. He was the royal portraitist to Christian VI of Denmark. Biography He initially studied under Johann Salomon Wahl. In 1755 he was awarded a gold medal in painting at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, but was denied entry into the institution. He quickly developed a reputation for his portraits, and between 1757 and 1772 he traveled and worked in Saint Petersburg where he became the imperial court painter. He painted several portraits of Catherine the Great, as well as other royals. After a number of lucrative commissions, Eriksen returned to Denmark to continue his work as a royal portraitist. Johannes Ewald
Johannes Ewald (18 November 174317 March 1781) was a Danish national dramatist, psalm writer and poet. The lyrics of a song from one of his plays are used for one of the Danish national anthems, ''Kong Christian stod ved højen mast'' which has equal status of national anthem together with ''Der er et yndigt land''. Quite until the days of romanticism, Ewald was considered the unsurpassed Danish poet. Today he is probably more lauded than read; though considered classics, only few of his works have become popular. Biography He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. Ewald grew up in a strongly pietistic parsonage. His father was Enevold Ewald (1696-1754), vicar at the orphanage in Copenhagen. Johan Frederik Clemens
Johan Frederik Clemens (29 November 1749 – 5 November 1831) was a Pomeranian-Danish printmaker in etching. Early life and education Clemens was born in Gollnow (now Goleniów) near Stettin (now Szczecin) in Pomerania, to a poor Saxon weaver, Johan David Clemens, and his wife Anna Francken. The father, along with his son Johan, moved to Copenhagen when the boy was still quite young. He sought to begin his training at the Royal Danish Academy of Art (''Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi'') already in 1760 at the age of 11. He enrolled for training, but was rejected by Drawing Master Hans Clio as being too young and little. Sculptor Simon Carl Stanley took an interest in the child, and with his help Johan came into the School of Drawing in 1761. He trained both as a decorative painter, and as a craftsman painter. Jonas Haas
Jonas Haas (1720 – 10 April 1775) was a German-born Danish engraver. Haas was born in Nuremberg in 1720. After spending several years working in Hamburg, he moved to Copenhagen with several other of his fellow artists. Some of these included: Johan Martin Preisler and Carl Marcus Tuscher. In 1755, Haas was appointed official engraver for the University of Copenhagen. In addition to a large amount of small portraits of contemporary and deceased people (including 15 Zealand bishops), he produced works for ''The Danish Atlas'' and vignettes of Frederic Louis Norden's travels. In Hamburg, he had married Anna Rosine Fritsch, the daughter of an acquaintance engraver. They had four children.
