Perth Sharks
The Perth Sharks are an Australian junior ice hockey team based in Perth, Western Australia playing in the Australian Junior Ice Hockey League. They represent one of the two junior ice hockey teams from Western Australia currently playing in the AJIHL, which is the most elite level for ice hockey at a national level for ages between 16–20 years old. Team history Tryouts for the new Perth Sharks team began on 2 September 2014 with a mandatory fitness assessment, held on 2 September 2014 at Kingsway Christian College, and two ice sessions. The Perth Sharks played their first Australian Junior Ice Hockey League game on Monday October 21, 2013 against the Perth Pelicans. The Sharks team included national draft players Remy McGuiness from South Australia, Anthony Barnes and Jordan Millen from Queensland. Australian Junior Ice Hockey League
The Australian Junior Ice Hockey League (AJIHL) is an elite amateur national ice hockey league in Australia, open to players 20 years of age or younger. History The Australian Junior Ice Hockey League was first announced on 18 September 2012 by Ice Hockey Australia. The inaugural season consisted of four teams – Melbourne Blackhawks, Melbourne Red Wings, Sydney Lightning and the Sydney Maple Leafs, with teams being operated by their respective state governing body. The first season started on 20 October 2012 at the Medibank Icehouse in Melbourne and ran until March 2013 with the finals to be held on 9 and 10 March 2013. The Sydney Maple Leafs won the inaugural AJIHL finals after beating the Melbourne Red Wings in a tie-breaking sudden overtime period after the teams leveled the two game series. 2013–14 AJIHL Season
The 2013–14 AJIHL season is the second season of the Australian Junior Ice Hockey League. It ran from 5 October 2013 until 1 March 2014, with the finals running from 8 March 2014 until 9 March 2014. The AJIHL is the highest Australian national junior ice hockey competition. League business On August 22, 2013, it was announced that the Melbourne Red Wings would change their name to the Melbourne Glaciers and the Melbourne Blackhawks would be renamed the Melbourne Whalers, which avoided the close resemblance with the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL after the NHL had concerns over breaches of copyright and this allowed the team to develop its own brand identity. Joan McKowen Memorial Trophy
The Joan McKowen Memorial Trophy is the annually awarded championship trophy, of the Australian Women's Ice Hockey League (AWIHL), to the winner of the AWIHL finals. Originally donated in 1995, the trophy is named after Joan McKowen who died September 15, 1992 and her husband Maxwell McKowen died in 2010. This trophy originated from a women's ice hockey championship tournament that started in 1994, which was a competition that was hosted in Queensland between a New South Wales team and a Queensland team competing. This invitational Women's tournament was just the beginning and saw the New South Wales team winning the championship. From this competition, the Joan McKowen Memorial Trophy began, first being awarded in February 1995.
