Joan McKowen Memorial Trophy
The Joan McKowen Memorial Trophy is the annually awarded championship trophy, of the Australian Women's Ice Hockey League (AWIHL), to the winner of the AWIHL finals. Originally donated in 1995, the trophy is named after Joan McKowen who died September 15, 1992 and her husband Maxwell McKowen died in 2010. This trophy originated from a women's ice hockey championship tournament that started in 1994, which was a competition that was hosted in Queensland between a New South Wales team and a Queensland team competing. This invitational Women's tournament was just the beginning and saw the New South Wales team winning the championship. From this competition, the Joan McKowen Memorial Trophy began, first being awarded in February 1995. This event was held annually and served as the Australian senior women's national ice hockey championship. Ice Hockey
Ice hockey (or simply hockey) is a team sport played on ice skates, usually on an ice skating rink with lines and markings specific to the sport. It belongs to a family of sports called hockey. The Australian Ice Hockey Federation, currently trading as Ice Hockey Australia (IHA), is the official national governing body of ice hockey in Australia and is a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation. It was first established in 1908, making it one of the oldest national ice hockey associations in the world. 2017–18 AWIHL Season
The 2017–18 AWIHL season is the 11th season of the Australian Women's Ice Hockey League (AWIHL). It ran from 28 October 2017 until 18 March 2018. Four teams competed in 24 regular season games followed by 4 playoff games, making up the AWIHL Finals weekend. The Sydney Sirens claimed the premiership title for finishing top of the regular season standings, while the Melbourne Ice claimed the Joan McKowen Memorial Trophy championship title by winning the grand final. Melbourne finished runner-up in the season standings while Sydney lost the grand final. Adelaide Rush came last in the regular season and claimed the wooden spoon. 2015–16 AWIHL Season
The 2015–16 AWIHL season is the ninth season of the Australian Women's Ice Hockey League. It will run from 24 October 2015 until 24 January 2016. League business On Monday, 13 July 2015 it was announced that this season will see changes to the import rules, which were as follows: 1. Anyone that doesn't have Permanent Residency is an import, including New Zealanders. 2. Only 4 imports per roster, and only 2 can play per game. 3. No import goalies. The Adelaide Rush is a women's ice hockey team in the Australian Women's Ice Hockey League, which is the highest level national competition in Australia. The team is based in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. History Before the AWIHL The Adelaide Assassins were one of the four founding teams in the Australian Women's Ice Hockey League, which officially began in 2007 after two showcase season were held previously. The South Australian Ice Hockey Association, currently trading as Ice Hockey South Australia is the governing body of ice hockey in South Australia, Australia. The South Australia Ice Hockey Association is a Member Association (MA) of Ice Hockey Australia.
