Percussion Ensemble (album)
''Percussion Ensemble'' is an album by American percussionist Milford Graves, recorded in July 1965 and released in 1966 by the ESP-Disk label. On the album, Graves is joined by fellow percussionist Sonny Morgan (also known as Sunny Morgan). The two had previously recorded together on the Montego Joe albums ''Arriba!'' and ''Wild & Warm''. Morgan would go on to play and record regularly with Leon Thomas and others, but died in 1976. According to Graves, additional musicians were supposed to be involved in the recording, but "people couldn't cut it. I had a few name guys in there, but they couldn't understand the concept... Sonny Morgan, he was just an unbelievable guy. He was the one who could cut it. So, we'd wind up with just a duo." Regarding the titles of the pieces, Graves explained that they were assigned numbers according to how many beats were in each measure. Milford Graves
Milford Graves (August 20, 1941 – February 12, 2021) was an American jazz drummer, percussionist, Professor Emeritus of Music, researcher/inventor, visual artist/sculptor, gardener/herbalist, and martial artist. Graves was noteworthy for his early avant-garde contributions in the 1960s with Paul Bley, Albert Ayler, and the New York Art Quartet, and is considered to be a free jazz pioneer, liberating percussion from its timekeeping role. The composer and saxophonist John Zorn referred to Graves as "basically a 20th-century shaman." Early life Graves was born in Jamaica, Queens, New York City, on August 20, 1941. He began playing drums when he was three years old, and was introduced to the congas at age eight. He also studied timbales and African hand drumming at an early age. ESP-Disk
ESP-Disk is a New York-based record company and label founded in 1963 by lawyer Bernard Stollman. History Though it originally existed to release Esperanto-based music, beginning with its second release (Albert Ayler's ''Spiritual Unity''), ESP became the most important exponent of what is commonly referred to as free jazz. Early releases included albums by Paul Bley, Pharoah Sanders and Sun Ra. ESP also released recordings by uncommercial underground rock acts including the Fugs, The Godz and Pearls Before Swine. The label's motto is "The artists alone decide what you will hear." Bernard Stollman faced allegations of not paying royalties to the artists that were signed to ESP-Disk. Bäbi (album)
''Bäbi'' is a live album by American percussionist Milford Graves, recorded in March 1976 and released in 1977 by the Institute of Percussive Studies, a label owned and run by Graves and Andrew Cyrille. The album features Graves on drums and percussion, along with reed players Arthur Doyle and Hugh Glover. The album was reissued in 2018 by Corbett vs. Dempsey. The original tapes of the concert had been lost, so the reissue was remastered directly from vinyl. In the meantime, Graves, while looking through his archives, discovered a tape of the trio dating from 1969. Four tracks from this tape were included in the reissue. Roger "Montego Joe" Sanders (born 1929, New York City; d. June 28, 2010, Brooklyn, New York City) was an American jazz percussionist and drummer. Career Sanders as a teenager played with a number of bands, led by top jazz musicians, including Babatunde Olatunji's (''Drums of Passion'', 1959) Art Blakey's Afro-Drum Ensemble (''African Beat'', Blue Note 1962), also with Ted Curson, Max Roach, Monty Alexander, Phil Upchurch, Dizzy Gillespie, Willis Jackson, Herbie Mann, Harold Vick, Teddy Edwards, George Benson, Jack McDuff, Rufus Harley (''Kings/Queens'') and Johnny Lytle. Amos Leon Thomas Jr. (October 4, 1937 – May 8, 1999), known professionally as Leon Thomas, was an American jazz and blues vocalist, born in East St. Louis, Illinois, and known for his bellowing glottal-stop style of free jazz singing in the late 1960s and 1970s. Life and career Leon Thomas was born Amos Thomas, Jr. on October 4, 1937, in East St. Louis, Illinois. He studied music at Tennessee State University. ''All About Jazz'' is a website established by Michael Ricci in 1995. A volunteer staff publishes news, album reviews, articles, videos, and listings of concerts and other events having to do with jazz. Ricci maintains a related site, ''Jazz Near You'', about local concerts and events. ''The Penguin Guide to Jazz'' is a reference work containing an encyclopedic directory of jazz recordings on CD which were (at the time of publication) currently available in Europe or the United States. The first nine editions were compiled by Richard Cook and Brian Morton, two chroniclers of jazz resident in the United Kingdom.
