Perameles
''Perameles'' is a genus of marsupials of the order Peramelemorphia. They are referred to as long-nosed bandicoots or barred bandicoots. ''Perameles'', or ‘pouched badger’, is a hybrid word, from the Greek (πήρα, ‘pouch, bag’) and the Latin (‘marten, badger’). More than half the known recent species of ''Perameles'' have been driven to extinction, although these extinct species were long considered conspecific with '' P. bougainville'', a 2018 study determined them to be distinct species. The extant and recently extinct species are: *Western barred bandicoot (''P. bougainville'') *†Desert bandicoot (''P. eremiana'') *†New South Wales barred bandicoot (''P. fasciata'') *Eastern barred bandicoot (''P. gunnii'') *†Southwestern barred bandicoot (''P. myosuros'') *Long-nosed bandicoot (''P. nasuta'') *†Southern barred bandicoot (''P. notina'') *Queensland barred bandicoot (''P. pallescens'') *†Ooldea barred bandicoot ''Perameles papillon'', the Nulla ...

Long-nosed Bandicoot
The long-nosed bandicoot (''Perameles nasuta''), a marsupial, is a species of bandicoot found in eastern Australia, from north Queensland along the east coast to Victoria. Around long, it is sandy- or grey-brown with a long snouty nose. Omnivorous, it forages for invertebrates, fungi and plants at night. Taxonomy French naturalist Étienne Louis Geoffroy described the long-nosed bandicoot in 1804. Swiss naturalist Heinrich Rudolf Schinz described a large specimen from near Bathurst in the Blue Mountains as a new species, ''Perameles lawson'', in 1825, though the specimen was lost at sea in shipwreck. French naturalist Pierre Boitard described ''Isoodon musei'' in 1841, both are now classified as ''P. nasuta''. Two subspecies are recognised: ''P. nasuta'' subspecies ''nasuta'' is found from western Victoria through eastern New South Wales and north to central Queensland, and ''P. nasuta'' subspecies ''pallescens'', found from central Queensland through to the Cape York Peninsu ...

Western Barred Bandicoot
The Western barred bandicoot (''Perameles bougainville''), also known as the Marl, is a small species of bandicoot; now extinct across most of its former range, the western barred bandicoot only survives on offshore islands and in fenced sanctuaries on the mainland. Description The Western barred bandicoot Is much smaller than its relative the eastern barred bandicoot (''Perameles gunnii''), and is darker in its colouring, which is a grizzled brown. It measures about in length. It has two "bars" across its rump and has a short, tapered tail. It was a solitary and crepuscular hunter, eating insects, spiders, and worms and occasionally tubers and roots. When the bandicoot feels threatened, it typically leaps into the air and then burrows to safety. Taxonomy The first description of the Western barred bandicoot was from a specimen taken at Peron Peninsula in 1817 by naturalists on the ''Uranie''. Populations of the ''Perameles'' species have been referred to by various names, ...

Eastern Barred Bandicoot
The eastern barred bandicoot (''Perameles gunnii'') is a nocturnal, rabbit-sized marsupial endemic to southeastern Australia, being native to the island of Tasmania and mainland Victoria. It is one of three surviving bandicoot species in the genus ''Perameles''. It is distinguishable from its partially-sympatric congener – the long-nosed bandicoot – via three or four dark horizontal bars found on its rump. In Tasmania, it is relatively abundant. The mainland population in Victoria is struggling and is subject to ongoing conservation endeavors. Description The eastern barred bandicoot weighs less than and has a short tail and three to four whitish bars across the rump. The Eastern barred bandicoot has two separated populations, one on the mainland of Australia and one on the island of Tasmania. The Tasmanian form is somewhat larger than the mainland form as the average adult mass is 750 g in Victoria and 1,000 g in Tasmania. It lives for just two to three years and is not g ...
